Waterloo Biofilter hits the news

Projects are moving ahead and in October, we distributed a news release about how Waterloo Biofilter's Waterloo EC-P™ technology works.

Basically, it mimics the way phosphorus is removed naturally in iron-rich soils through the crystallization of iron-phosphate minerals.

Field technician Brad Welch is in the photo. He helped install the technology and is running the system.

Spotlight on our people

Randy Hope co-chairs the steering committee for the Thames River Phosphorus Reduction Collaborative (PRC) and he’s passionate about getting solid evidence about what’s contributing to higher phosphorus levels and then identifying ways to reduce them.

“In order to keep fresh water clean, we need to be proactive in finding out where the problem exists,” he says. “It’s not helpful to point fingers – instead we need to identify and fix issues.”

Demo sites up and running

Six demonstration sites in fields and at municipal water facilities across Chatham-Kent and in the London area are being commissioned. Sampling for phosphorus content in the water will be conducted through the winter of 2019/2020. See project updates here .

Ducks Unlimited Canada

Ducks Unlimited Canada has completed a year of research in the Lake Erie watershed to quantify the contributions of restored wetlands to clean water by capturing and storing phosphorus from surface-water runoff.

This research is part of their work to better understand the role of wetlands in restoring water quality and inform conservation decisions with data on how, and how much, restored wetlands improve water quality. The study will also help improve wetland restoration design and the strategic placement of restorations within watersheds.
