August 2018 Resources

Our Mission:
Supporting lifelong faith formation
in the home and congregation.

From the President's Desk

August is one of my favorite times of the year. School supplies go on sale. The county fairs are in full swing. (The town I live in has 8,000 residents and 4 counties!) Fall plans are revving up. And I get to spend two days at the Global Leadership Summit listening to business and religious leaders from around the world. This year was especially fun as it was the first time my mother and my daughter also attended.

Pastor Craig Groeschel opened the Summit reminding us that leadership is about influence, not control. He offered three characteristics of a good leader:

1. A good leader loves their people and shows it
2. A good leader inspires people to be their best, pulling from their inner passions
3. A good leader is willing to empower -- because you can have control  or you can have growth but never both!

His next statement was simple:

We can make excuses OR
we can make a difference.
But never both!

So what are you planning this fall to become a better leader? How are you empowering and inspiring leaders? Is your team making excuses or making a difference? Be sure to visit the Christian Education Network Facebook Group to share your answers and see what others are doing.

Blessings on your journey,

Pastor Juli Lejman-Guy, President

Want to learn about digital citizenship and teens? Here's a playlist of videos from Common Sense Education to help you teach them about the imprint they leave as they encounter the world of the Internet and social media.

 Advent and Christmas

Are you looking for a no-fuss Christmas program? That Starry Night is a Christmas musical centered around three friends who stumble upon a pageant rehearsal and end up being part of the show! You can receive 30% off if you order by September 21.

LEAD offers free print-ready resources for worship or reflection, including Advent coloring beads. Using texts from the Revised Common Lectionary, the resources include:

  • Weekly bulletin with liturgy and prayers (in both color and black & white versions)
  • Weekly images to color
  • Prayer prompts for praying with prayer beads
Video instructions are included for creating your own Protestant prayer beads. This simple project is ideal for individuals, families, small groups, Sunday School classes, or as part of a multi-generational event involving the entire congregation.

Adult Faith Formation

Gather Magazine has released its fall Bible study, "Repentance." This three-part Bible study by Meghan Johnston Aelabouni will explore how we as Lutheran Christians understand the role of repentance in our faith, especially as we understand God's grace to be unearned and freely given.

Title: Leading on Purpose: Intentionality and Teaming in Congregational Life

Author: Eric Burtness

Exploring the Purpose-Driven Church phenomenon, Eric Burtness provides pastors and church leaders with a Lutheran view of what it means to lead on purpose and integrates the Purpose-Driven philosophy into the context of Lutheran congregational life. Prayer Pause

Heavenly Father,

Guide us into the fall season. Be present with us as new learning opportunities arise. Lead our congregations as programs begin again. Walk beside us in all we do. Help us to strengthen our relationship with you.

Amen.
