Cloud Infrastructure Services

Welcome to the Summer Cirrostratus Group Newsletter.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is now available. See my thoughts on it below.

It's not too early to think about what conferences you might want to attend this fall. I've included a resource I use to identify conferences.

I'm always interested in hearing about your plans for developing and offering cloud applications, so let me know what your plans are.

Gartner Magic Quadrant - Infrastructure as a Service

Gartner just released their most recent Magic Quadrant for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). In most respects there aren't any surprises with the possible exception of Microsoft Azure being so close in the evaluation to AWS. The only other real competitor at this point is Google. Since Force.com from Salesforce is a Platform as opposed to infrastructure it is not included in this evaluation.

This quadrant put together with market share information gives a clear picture of the market share leaders growing faster than the other providers. This Information Week article has the growth rates and market share numbers for the top 4 providers. Interestingly, IBM is in the top 4 showing a market share of about 7%, small compared to Amazon at 31% but still significant. Microsoft and Google are growing at 100% and 167% respectively, faster than Amazon at 53%. The next 20 providers show an average growth rate of about 40%, clearly making it difficult to ever catch up.

Based on the descriptions of AWS, Microsoft and Google there are clearly opportunities for Professional Services and Managed Services firms to provide value added services because of the increasing complexity of the services. The complexity of these services is steadily increasing.
Cloud Conferences

The best resource that I have found for finding out about various cloud related conferences is Lanyrd. This is the link to the upcoming cloud conferences in the US. The site has all types of conferences including events outside of the United States. Search on whatever topic you're interested in IoT, Big Data, Mobile or software in general. It's impossible to go to all the conferences that you might like to but just looking at the topics and speakers can give you a good idea of current topics.
