Data Privacy

Welcome to The Cirrostratus Group April newsletter.

Data privacy has been in the news a lot recently with the upcoming European Union General Data Protection Regulation ( GDPR) enforcement date in May and the Facebook Senate hearings. I expect that increased emphasis on data privacy will have an impact on most SaaS businesses.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Worldwide Public Cloud Infrastructure Managed Service Providers provides a good picture of the current state of managed service providers and the types of services provided.

I'm always interested in hearing about your experiences with delivering cloud applications.

Data Privacy
I have recently read several write-ups by analyst Ben Thompson who runs a site called Stratechery. I enjoy reading his perspectives on a variety of current tech topics.

We've been hearing a lot lately about data privacy and no matter how things evolve I believe it is likely that there will be more focus on data privacy and it will impact SaaS providers.

Ben has give an excellent overview on the different perspectives of the recent Facebook Senate hearings. I also found that his post on open systems versus closed systems and the impact on privacy very interesting. A point that he makes is that Google and Facebook will actually be helped and become more entrenched by GDPR.

Magic Quadrant for Managed Services
Gartner recently published the Magic Quadrant for Worldwide Public Cloud Infrastructure Managed Service Providers. This Magic Quadrant specifically focuses on the Managed Services providers who provide managed services for AWS, Azure & Google Cloud. These services are essentially many of the above kinds of classical IT managed services for large cloud environments but also include cloud migration and devops services.

One of the sections I found most interesting is the Market Overview. Some high points include the rapid evolution of services, rapid growth of providers and the focus on professional services. Additionally, even though the market is growing significantly the number of providers is predicted to be reduced due to the substantial technology and automation scale required.

I think this will be an interesting market to watch both as a provider and as a consumer of these services. Not all businesses can be experts on how to manage applications in the public cloud.
