Cloud Economics

Welcome to the April Cirrostratus Group Newsletter.

This month's newsletter has some great information about how to analyze the softer cost savings of using cloud services and information about the latest open source survey.

I'm always interested in hearing about your plans for developing and offering cloud applications.

Cloud Economics

There have been a lot of conversations and white papers about cloud economics which highlight the capex versus opex costs of the cloud and the hard economic cost savings such as more efficient use of hardware and reduced labor costs. This is one of the few papers I've seen which describes how to quantify some of the softer cost savings and advantages of using the cloud such as:
  • Reuse of services and applications
  • Increased developer productivity
  • Improved customer satisfaction
  • Ability to change business processes quickly
  • Increased global reach

If you are looking to move your SaaS service to the cloud instead of an owned infrastructure this paper will give you some additional perspectives.

Open Source 360 Survey

After 10 years the Future of Open Source Survey has changed a bit and it is now the Black Duck Software Open Source 360 survey. It is a similar survey and it is currently open for people to contribute. Open Source continues to be an important technology and building block for SaaS applications and I would encourage you to fill out this survey. Results are expected to be available in the summer and I plan to include the results in a future newsletter.
