,

Welcome to the April Cirrostratus Group Newsletter. This month I've focused on  information about the current state of open source software and it's increasing importance in software development.

I am always interested in your plans for developing and offering cloud applications. Let me know what you're working on.

Future of Open Source Survey - 2016 Results

The results of the 2016 Future of Open Source Survey sponsored by Northbridge and Black Duck software are now available. This webinar is a good way to review the results.

Several of the highlights include:
  1. OSS is the foundation for today's architecture
    • Over 65% of respondents use OSS to speed application development. Devops is a key area.
  2. OSS is the engine of innovation
    • Freedom from vendor lock-in is a prime reason to use OSS.
    • Increasing sophistication of OSS selection although 50% of respondents have no process to select and approve OSS.
  3. Greater Diversity of business models
    • Most SaaS companies are built on OSS.
    • Other models including support and consulting are becoming prevalent.
  4. Increased company support for contributions
    • Over 65% of companies actively encourage developers to engage and contribute under the company name.

Read my article on OSS selection for SaaS if you are actively making OSS selections. This type of selection process is what I think all companies who use OSS should have in place.

Enterprise Integration Platform as a Service
Cloud integration tools which are capable of integrating multi-vendor SaaS applications, APIs, on-premise applications and other data sources are becoming increasing important as more enterprises rely on SaaS for mission critical applications. Gartner's new Magic Quadrant on this topic is available here. Dell Boomi, Informatica, Mulesoft, Jitterbit and Snaplogic are all in the leaders quadrant.
