Commemorate your loved one with a one-of-a-kind art piece

Celebrate Silas

Through a partnership with The Dougy Center, Celebrate Silas Memorial 5k and Hallow Studios, you are invited to create a one-of-a-kind art piece commemorating your deceased loved one.

Join us for one of any free workshops in January or February where you will create a 16” x 24” portrait based on a photo of your loved one through a communal, hands-on process of hand coloring and pasting a photo on to a wooden canvas. Portraits will be displayed in an art installation at the 2019 Celebrate Silas Memorial 5k on March 3rd and returned to participants following the event. Celebrate Silas is in memory of Silas Bogdanovic, who died unexpectedly a week after his first birthday.

Advanced registration for the workshops is required, and all workshops will take place at a Dougy Center location in the Portland area. Click here for more information or to register.

Dates and locations for the Portrait Workshops:
Sunday, January 13: Canby location
Saturday, January 19: Portland location
Saturday, January 26: Hillsboro location
Sunday, February 10: Portland location
Saturday, February 16: Portland location

Grief Out Lout

Okay, so it’s not really a grief party, but it is Grief Out Loud’s 100th episode! When we started this show four years ago in January of 2015, we weren’t sure we’d do more than 10 episodes, never mind 100, and we have each of our listeners and guests to thank for helping us reach this milestone.

In the past four years, we’ve had the honor of hosting 99 storytellers who came forward with the emotions and thoughts that may never have been spoken aloud before. For many of us, grief resides in the shadows. It’s tucked behind, kept quiet, and told how to behave. And by behave, what most of us mean is please stop existing. Stop tugging on our hearts and taking up space in the vacancy left behind by the people who have died.

What we’ve learned is grief doesn’t take kindly to being told what to do and it especially doesn’t like being told to be quiet. So that’s what we hoped to create with this show, a place where people can talk openly about all of the thoughts and feelings that come with grief. A place where those who are feeling lost and adrift can come for connection and flashlights of hope. A place to feel less alone and maybe a little less lonely.

We’ve had amazing guests, including grieving people from all over who were willing to share what they’ve learned and what they still struggle with. As a way of thanking listeners and guests for making Grief Out Loud what it is, we asked listeners and guests to tell us what the show means to them. This episode is a compilation of what they had to say. Click here to listen.

With your help, we exceeded our year-end goal!

Thank you!

We are overjoyed to share that with your help, we were able to raise $131,892 in the month of December in addition to the $19,991 raised through the Willamette Week Give Guide! We are so grateful for our community of supporters and our generous donors who provide matching funds. These gifts will be put to work right away to support grieving children and families this year.

Thank you for all you do for The Dougy Center!
