Dear Friends:
There’s a place in Matthew’s gospel where Jesus looks at the confused crowds and sees them as “harassed and helpless, like a sheep without a shepherd”. They look lost, but Jesus sees them through compassionate eyes, through eyes of hope. He sees what’s best about them. He sees their potential. Then Jesus says the harvest is ripe, and God will gather us like a crop of wheat, but we need laborers. To me, the situation screams: “Somebody should do something!” The disciples are the somebodies in God’s eyes.

One of Sawyerville’s three goals is to improve race relations in Alabama. In all of our programming, we teach our campers, students, participants, and staff to love one another with no exceptions, as Jesus loves us, and to respect the dignity of every human being as our Baptismal Covenant requires. Each year, high school and college students from all over the state come together to learn about the history of race in Alabama, to talk about their own experiences of race, and to discuss what they can do to improve race relations in Alabama.
About the Event:
- No cost to participants or staff
- Friday, January 12-Monday, January 15
- Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- Participants will lodge at St. Paul’s Selma on Friday night & St. John’s Montgomery from Saturday-Monday
- Meals are provided by local churches, groups, and/or those connected to Sawyerville
- Participants will visit museums and hear stories from those connected to the Civil Rights Movement. This year, we will visit the Dr. Richard Harris House, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, the Legacy Museum, and more!

Annual Fall Bazaar – November 11
St. James Episcopal Church will host its annual bazaar from 9 a.m. to noon. The bazaar will feature a variety of homemade goodies including cakes, casseroles, soups, and other kitchen creations; crafts; and pottery, including St. James’s much loved pottery crosses, which are blessed by Fr. Rob Iler before the Bazaar. St. James parishioners work year-round to create the treasures available at the Bazaar. All proceeds benefit local community outreach programs.
