By Bishop Prior
My little 5-year-old body was all a jitter as I was filled with both excitement and fear. Being the youngest, I had waited with great anticipation when my turn would finally come to get to go school. My brother had walked me to my kindergarten classroom and I was literally standing on the threshold of both the door and the beginning of the wonderful world of school. With a not so gentle shove my brother said, “Go on in!” And with that he was gone.
Sawyerville Camp is “On Now!”
On May 8th, 10 interns entered the Diocesan offices at Carpenter House with backpacks, laptops and water bottles, eager to begin the work of pre-Camp for Sawyerville. And they have done a lot in just a few weeks. Registering 176 staff applicants, Sawyerville has a full staff. Clergy and coordinators from across the Diocese have answered the call to serve on Program Staff. Bus drivers have been hired, teachers contracted, classrooms designated, meals requested, supplies dropped off, and camper applications distributed. In just a few days - May 28th to be exact - they will load up a 15 foot truck with donated supplies and move to Greensboro for 6 weeks.

...but we still need your help.
Sawyerville continues to grow every summer through its five programs: Summer Camp Summer Learning (added two grade levels this year serving 1st through 6th grades) Mentoring (gave laptops to 6 graduating Hale County high school students) Person to Person Scholarships (awarded $12,750 in scholarships to 15 graduating Hale County students to the colleges attending) Please check out the links below to see where you can help meet the needs of Sawyerville Summer 2023 and remember - It’s All for the Kids!
Please join us on Saturday, August 12, 2023, for the 26th Annual Jonathan Daniels Pilgrimage. We will gather in the courthouse square in Hayneville, Alabama, and begin our pilgrimage procession at 11 am. The procession will travel from the square to the old County Jail where Daniels was among those detained for a week after being arrested in Fort Deposit for picketing white-only businesses. The procession continues to the site of the old Varner’s Cash Store, where Daniels was killed. The procession ends in the Lowndes County Courthouse, where a service of Holy Communion will be celebrated in the courtroom where the man who shot Daniels had been tried and acquitted by an all-white jury.

Youth grades 9-12 are invited to participate in a retreat that will include participating in the pilgrimage August 11-13. For more information scan the QR codes in the Youth Pilgrimage flyer.
