LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT |
Another year has almost passed with most of our Chamber events behind us.
2018 has been a year where our Chambers activities have drawn record crowds.
Our signature events like The Health & Wellness Fest, Dragon Boat Race Festival
and the Taste At Port Jefferson have not only become the trademarks of our Chamber,
but also for our beloved Village of Port Jefferson. People come from far and wide to participate.
We have a lot of people to thank for our continued progress and expansion of
the chamber. Our boards of directors both past and present have through the years
further developed and tweaked the manner in which these events are presented
to the public. Many of our Chamber members have contributed their time and effort
helping us, giving their time unselfishly in our joint efforts. Without our sponsors and vendors our events would also not be successful so we are truly thankful for their support and contributions as well.
Our chamber director of operations, Barbara Ransome works tirelessly to insure that our events are run efficiently and professionally. Barbara is aided by Maryanne Douglas who has given us many years of service helping to guide us on the path of success. You will always see a smile on Cecilia Sullivan's face as she greets visitors who stop into our chamber building on the weekends looking for information about Port Jeff and our chamber.
On behalf of the chamber I would like to wish you all a happy holiday season.
The holidays are a time where we should all give thanks for our good fortunes and
consider helping others who may be less fortunate than we are.
Jim Karras

Port Jefferson's Slurp Ramen
was ranked one of the premier ramen restaurants nationwide.
Hoodline
, a hyperlocal news source based in San Francisco, Calif., released a list of the
top 50 ramen eateries
in the U.S. on Monday. And Slurp landed No. 49. "To determine 'best' businesses, Hoodline took into account the business's Yelp rating and the significance of that rating proportional to the number of reviews, as well as regional variations," wrote Hoodline writer
Nathan Falstreau
. According to the article, there were around 1,400 restaurants that categorized as a ramen eatery, with the majority of the restaurants in metro areas like Manhattan and San Francisco. "Texas, Illinois, Florida and Hawaii also seeing notable numbers of noodle-focused restaurants," wrote Falstreau. "We were shocked because we are in a small town and small restaurant," said Francesca Nakagawa, who owns Slurp with her husband, Atsushi. The Nakagawas found out they made the list through the owners of
Ippudo East Village
and
Ippudo Westside
, who we're ranked No. 1 and No. 9, respectively. "They texted us and said, 'Did you see this?' said Francesca, who opened Slurp in 2016. "We just couldn't believe it!"
Slurp is now planning to celebrate with its newly nationally ranked staff.
"We're taking all our employees out to eat," said Francesca.

Catching up with end of the summer events that Chamber hosted and our most current!
At the end of July the Chamber in cooperation with the 3-Village and Smithtown Chambers again sponsored an evening of networking a
'Summer Sunset Soirée'
at the
Old Field Club. Lite hor'dourves and food stations were presented and over 100 attendees came. Our sponsors were Mather Hospital-Northwell Health and Maggio Environmental Services. We thank them for their continued support.
In August was our third annual chamber partnership with the Patchogue Chamber. Our 'Summer Bash Beach Party' networking event was held on the Patchogue River at 'Off-Key Tikki' restaurant in Patchogue.
Live band, alcohol, and a real beach set up the festive mood. Joining the party was 'Jefferson' the giraffe in his party attire and raffled off to benefit both chambers!
September 15thmarked our 5thDragon Boat Race Festival. 30 racing teams, 6.5 hours of live pan-Asian entertainment made this year's event the best ever. The weather Gods shined down on us and the water was calm.
October marked the second year the Chamber in collaboration with Dan's Papers hosted the 11thannual 'The Taste @ Port Jefferson'. Again wildly successful, with the 50x100 clear ceiling tent and live musical performance by the band, 1 step Ahead.' A dining area for VIPS was added this year to go along with their own lounge. Over 30 food and beverage purveyors participated. Many thanks to our Chair Ken Kroncke and to our Chamber volunteers!
The Village's 'Harvest Festival'was received well. Weather held up and the very popular costumed dog parade was a big hit with over 100 animals participating. The popular chowder crawl contest sold out with 132 tickets purchased! This year there was a tie for FIRST PLACE with a banner going to C'est Cheese and Nantuckets!!! Second Place winner was Harbor Grill and Third Place winner was Gourmet Burger Bistro. Congratulations to ALL!!
