LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Old man winter really took a toll on our Chamber Of Commerce building this month.  Freezing pipes and drains for about a week. Our chamber staff Barb and Maryanne  bravely took all this in stride and continued to work through this difficult situation.  Thanks to all of our vendors who helped us out.

The New Year brings our members two great opportunities to grow their business.  Your Port Jeff Chamber Small Business Improvement Award is $1,000. The other is  The Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition Small Business Improvement Grant  of $1,200. In order to compete for these awards you must submit a "request letter"  which becomes your formal submission. This letter must state how monies will be spent.  The deadline for the Port Jeff Chamber award is Feb 5th, the Brookhaven Coalition's award  deadline is  March 23rd. Please visit our Chamber website for complete details. Don't miss  out on this great opportunity to grow your business presented by your Chamber partners!

Spring is right around the corner. Our first major event of the New Year is our Health &  Wellness Fest to be held at the Port Jeff High School on Saturday April 28th. Our committee  is already busily preparing for this event 9th year, stay tuned for details.

We will also be swearing in two new directors to your chamber board at our February 27th  evening networking meeting. Please join us for an evening of friendship, fun and networking  with your fellow chamber members. Think Spring!

Jim Karras
President

SANTA PARADE, PJCC SHOPPING CRAWL &
'SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY'

November 24th was a 'trifecta' for our business community.  With 3 coordinated events that started off the holiday shopping season!

Beginning with American Express's annual 'Shop Small Business Saturday'. Our Village had the privileged of having our Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone visit our main streets and to stop in to our Chamber Partners who shared with him their 'small business' successes! Mayor Margot Garant, SC Legislator Kara Hahn, and TOB Historian Barbara Russell joined in with also yours truly!

That rolled into our parade, which for the first time we started it in the am which worked out great for everyone. In all honesty the crowds this year were probably the largest on record.  Weather was perfect. The parade finished at Santa's workshop where he received all children for photo opportunities and he gave out candy canes.

Ongoing from 9-5pm the Chamber once again sponsored a 'holiday shopping Crawl'. This event combined the cooperation with our new
retailers group and our new restaurant group. Both groups created offers to the holiday shoppers.

Many thanks to our Chamber volunteers, Tad Cox as Santa, Pat Darling with Santa's Workshop, and Jimmy Miller with his trusted companion Oreo!

LUMINARIA NIGHTS

In month of December the Retailers Association in cooperation with our restaurant community and Chamber created a shopping event that was done every Wednesday night up to Christmas.  Promoting late night shopping our business community was available for those customers who enjoyed the shopping convenience of later hours and supporting our local merchants. Those participating shop keepers and restaurateurs created a festive atmosphere by marking off their entrance ways with luminaries. Exclusive offers were to be found and merchants did free gift wrapping.

HOLIDAY PARTY

Changed things up this year and the Chamber sponsored a holiday evening party rather than a breakfast.  The party took place at Danfords in their Coastal Room overlooking the harbor.  Decorated in a holiday theme the room lent itself to a festive atmosphere. The party included an open beer and wine bar, lite snacks and a coffee and dessert service.

Entertainment was created with a team building fun exercise. Individual group participants had to combine their general knowledge of identifying holiday songs from interesting pictures they were given in limited time frame!  The 'team' with the most correct answers won.  Their reward were large candy canes!

The two hour party went fast with 45 kindred spirits celebrated the beginning of the holiday season.
