Our 2025 Action Team Highlights

In 2025, the Heart of New Ulm (HONU) wrapped up its 17th year working to support a culture of wellness in New Ulm! For the last seven years, since 2019, HONU has operated as a community-owned health initiative being sustained through community partnership and funding.

This means that every year, HONU activities happen with the help of everyone in our community, including a volunteer Leadership Team and more than 70 volunteers who serve on seven action teams, representing more than 35 organizations.

Here’s a look at just a few of the many 2025 accomplishments the volunteers on these action teams helped realize.

Safe Routes to School Action Team Promotes Story Stroll in February

The Safe Routes to School Action Team created a Story Walk using the book “Run, Oscar, Run!” Each week during the month of February, the Story Walk is moving between local elementary schools (outside if weather permits) to encourage kids to get moving!

Incorporating physical activity into literacy learning significantly boosts reading skills, comprehension, focus and memory, especially in young children.

In early February, the Story Walk was hanging out between the New Ulm Public Schools and St. Paul's Lutheran Church & School campuses for kids to enjoy. Check out our Facebook page for a video of Mrs. Stadick's 1st grade class at Jefferson getting active outside and having fun!
