Idaho Bed and Breakfast Association Newsletter #26

May-June 2015

Hello from the Idaho B&B Association
News From The President

  , Brian Scott

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter.

We wanted to let you know that you will be receiving, via media mail, in the next few days, copies of all our printed collateral material made possible through your 2% bed tax collections which are partially distributed through the Idaho Travel Council to non profit groups such as ours. We have mailed out over 200 packets of material. Let us know if you do not receive one.

You will see that we went to print in late January so if you became a member after that date, your business is not listed but will be next year. The award winning brochure will help you send your guests throughout the state to B&B's in all 7 regions. The maps will provide you with a tool to entice your guests to "Stay & Play Longer" in our great state! If you would like more copies mailed to you, just let us know.

One way to off-set costs of printing and distribution of these materials is through advertising. (by the way, 20,000 of each were printed this past year and are currently being distributed by Certified Rack and Folder throughout the surrounding states in over 600 locations.) This printing production was up by 10,000 over last year. You will see that many of our members placed an ad in one or both of the maps. We encourage you to do so. At a cost of about 1 cent per piece ($195), you can be in 20,000 copies of printed material. As you can see, space is limited, so don't hesitate to send in your check to reserve a spot for your ad for 2016. Just another way we help our small lodging industry.

Featured Innkeepers:
John & Ellen Christensen
Fox Creek Inn
Victor, Idaho

This addition to our newsletter is something we hope you will enjoy. We can all learn so much from one another. You may be next to receive a 5 question phone call....

Fox Creek Inn is excited about being featured in the January 2013 issue of Sunset Magazine article on Teton Valley, Idaho. They  hope you can find time to visit this wonderful alternative to Jackson Hole and take advantage of the burgeoning food scene, exciting outdoor activities, beautiful scenery and friendly locals.

IBBA: Other than your website, where do you focus advertising that gives you the biggest bang for your buck?

We have a business listing with Trip Adviser. Upon arrival, many if our guests tell us they chose us because of our many outstanding reviews on Trip Adviser. We also advertise with and Expedia.

IBBA: What is the best thing you have done to your facility to help make your job easier?

We hired a very capable assistant manager. It makes such a huge difference to have 3 people to share the workload instead of 2. We are much more efficient when all three of us are on the job, sharing the work.

IBBA: Tell me a bit about your inn?

We have 4 rooms and we feel our biggest  asset is our location on the Idaho side of the Teton Range, close to Teton Park and just 35 minutes to Jackson Hole. Sometimes we get guests going and coming to these 2 destinations. We also have great hiking, biking and fly fishing.

IBBA: What part of your inn-keeping job is the most difficult?

Different breakfast times and guests showing up late for breakfast.

IBBA: What is the best part of your inn-keeping?

Having guests, skeptical upon arrival, comment as they leave, that this was their best bed and breakfast experience!

Big Thanks John & Ellen for your time! Have a great season!

Would You Like To Advertise In The 2016 Bike and Winery/Brewery Maps?

The Membership Brochure has gone to print and once again thanks for your membership renewals. There are ad spaces available on both of the maps for our next printing. The ad would be about the size of a business card and cost $195 for each ad placed. If you are interested in getting some big bang for your buck, these maps will be distributed throughout the surrounding states, the Seattle Ferry System, Glacier and Yellowstone Parks & several travel shows in 2016.  We print in quantities of 20,000 each time, so this would give you some exposure in print form that you may not have. Call Brian or Shar Scott regarding ads 208-651-2191.
Deadline for ad submission is January 15th! You will be receiving several copies of each map and the brochure in the next week.

PAII Attends FTC "Share Economy" Workshop

PAII attends Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Workshop in Washington D.C.

YOUR PAII was THERE, advocating for all B&Bs, at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Workshop on "The Sharing

Economy" (AKA Airbnb, Uber) in Washington, DC on 9 June, 2015.

We had previously submitted the PAII Position Paper on Short Term Rentals and provided several pointed questions that

are now "In the Record" and which were addressed during the workshop sessions.

Fox Creek Inn

Oatmeal Pancakes

4 cups oatmeal (typically I use 1 cup quick & 3 of thick, regular)

1 cup Kamut or Spelt flour (I prefer Kamut as it's nuttier tasting)

2 tsp. baking powder

2 tsp baking soda

2 to 3 pinches of salt

4 eggs

4 cups buttermilk

? cup oil (use safflower oil, olive if you don't have safflower)

? + cup honey

2 tsp vanilla

Combine & mix all dry ingredients.  Combine liquid ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add liquid ingredients to dry.  Mix ingredients at least 45 or more minutes prior to cooking.  Best if mixed the night before cooking.  May have to add some water to get dough to correct consistency before frying, especially if set overnight. Cook pancakes at 350 degrees.  Enjoy!!

Big IMPORTANT News RE: "Shared Economy"

Big thanks to Maureen and Al Snyder of Ida- Home B&B in Post Falls, for setting up a meeting with Idaho State Senator, Bob Nonini. We would like to thank Mr. Nonini of Coeur d'Alene for listening to several of our IBBA board members and the Snyders, address the issues we are facing concerning the loss of business that our industry, and all lodging properties, are facing due to the increase in VRBO's, Airbnb, FlipKey, etc. Due to the positive response from the  Idaho Travel Council after our presentations over the past 2 years regarding this issue, we felt it was time to move it into the political arena for all the small lodging in the state. Please share your concerns with your local State Senator.
