A 33-year tradition continued in Newark's North Ward on Saturday when children from the North Ward Center Little League and Liga Roberto Clemente de Newark marched down Mount Prospect and Bloomfield Avenues for the annual parade and opening day festivities.
Hundreds of children dressed in their baseball uniforms marched with parents, grandparents and siblings to the Stephen N. Adubato Sr. Sports Complex in Branch Brook Park. Teams are sponsored by local businesses, schools and non-profit organizations as well as elected officials.

North Ward Center Leaders Honored
The North Ward Center's leaders were honored this spring by a variety organizations for their outstanding leadership in the community.
Stephen N. Adubato, the founder of The North Ward Center, was honored by the New Jersey Ballet at its 52nd annual gala on March 12 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He was also named "Humanitarian of the Year" at the the Archdiocese of Newark's annual gala on April 5.
Adrianne Davis, the co-founder of the North Ward Center, was given an exemplary service award by the National Association of African-American Administrators at its 19th annual scholarship breakfast on March 19.
Michele Adubato, the executive director of the North Ward Center, was honored on April 29 by Caldwell College at its 36th Annual Presidential Scholarship Gala. The award was presented to her by her brother, Steve.

Center for Autism Hosts Workshops During Autism Awareness Month
The Center for Autism at The North Ward Center marked Autism Awareness month during April with four workshops that featured leading experts in their fields.
The first workshop on April 6 featured speakers from MOM2MOM, 24-hour helpline staffed by peer counselors to assist mothers of special needs children in Union and Essex counties in dealing with their everyday stress.
An April 12 workshop focused on a program known as Handwriting Without Tears. It was presented by Nereida Meloi, an occupational therapist and Anne Pereira, a special education teacher.
Dr. Isabel DeTrizio Carotenuto, a neurodevelopmental pediatrician, gave a one-hour talk on dietary interventions for children with autism April 14.
The final workshop, which focused on functional communication, was led by Christian Meneses, a speech language specialist from the New Jersey Regional Day School on Lyons Avenue. |

R achel was frustrated trying to communicate with her autistic son. Denise had become a doormat for her five children. Hazel realized that spanking her daughter wasn't getting the eight-year-old to do better in school. Maria couldn't cope with her son's outbursts - the product she believes of never having known his father.
So they signed up for a 12-week parenting class at the North Ward Center Family Success Center in Newark. Their reasons for taking the class may seem very different, but they all pretty much were in the same predicament.

With its detailed carved oak lintels, parquet floors and original plaster ceilings, the Clark Mansion in the Forest Hill section of Newark is one of the finest examples of a well preserved Victorian-era mansion.
For that reason, the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Victorian Society gave its annual preservation award to The North Ward Center, which has called the 33-room mansion home since the early 1970s.
