Resource Stewardship Initiative metrics show improvement

metrics
The Physician Alliance continues to participate in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Resource Stewardship Initiative to decrease over-utilization of medical services, procedures and tests. The RSI also encourages conversations between physicians and patients about appropriate and necessary care.

TPA selected three focus areas to target for improvement based on current physician scores and TPA's ranking among other physician organizations in these specific areas. In the past quarter reporting period, The Physician Alliance reported improvements in all areas (lower rates are better):
  • Pap smears in women under 21 years: 1.6% to 1.5%
  • Antibiotic use in adults with bronchitis: 74.0% to 71.8%
  • Low back pain imaging: 33.8% to 31.9%
Congratulations to all physicians and practices focused on improving these rates! We appreciate your efforts.

Data indicated that primary care and chiropractic medicine have high utilization rates for low back pain imaging. This metric will be a key focus area for TPA in the coming months. TPA created patient education materials related to the three RSI focus areas, helping physicians initiate conversations with patients about appropriate treatments. Posters, Rx pads, action plans and more can be found on TPA's website (complimentary to TPA members).
Community Resource Fairs offer valuable information to help patients

The Physician Alliance is hosting the annual Community Resource Fairs to bring together local  nonprofits and community organizations to share  resources for improved patient care. The annual events  offer opportunities for practices to gather valuable information on community organizations and resources  for patients, including mental health support, domestic violence support and shelter,  food pantries, cancer support, home care and more.  Attendance by a practice staff also fulfills capabilities for  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Physician Group Incentive Program.

Working with practices to close gaps in care

The Physician Alliance continues to work with practices to close gaps in care throughout the year. Focusing on gaps before the end of the year can help ensure patient action and prevent a rush to complete.

Practice staff, practice resource team members and TPA staff are making a difference. To date, 27,893 gaps have been reviewed, with 4,587 gaps entered into Health e-Blue. TPA averages a 16% gap closure rate.

TPA developed several resources to help practices close gaps in care. A letter template is available for customization to patients, and a variety of patient education materials relate to specific target metrics. TPA sends a monthly electronic email focused on various gaps in care targets and marketing tools. If you are not receiving this email and would like to, contact Heather to be added to the distribution list.
