Are you registered to e-prescribe controlled substances?
As the opioid epidemic in the United States continues to grow, The Physician Alliance is working with our more than 2,200 physicians and health care partners to help combat this crisis. One important way is through improved e-prescribing of controlled substances.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan launched an initiative to track e-prescribing of physicians participating in the Physician Group Incentive Program. TPA PGIP physicians have done a great job of improving rates for e-prescribing of controlled substances. When TPA began tracking rates in 2016, the organization's overall ePCS rate was 5.5%. TPA's rate improved to 36.3% by May 2018.
REMINDER: As of June 1, 2018, Michigan physicians must be registered with the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) if prescribing any schedule 2 to 5 controlled substance (click here to register). There are also new rules for any prescription of schedule 2 to 5 controlled substance exceeding a three-day supply. Click here for a FAQ from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, with links to helpful forms and tips.
To learn more about e-prescribing of controlled substances in your practice, contact Fran Burley at (private practices) or Tonya Davis-Kennedy at (St. John Providence employed practices).
Help patients prevent and manage diabetes
The Physician Alliance is launching new projects focusing on prediabetes and high risk diabetic patients, to be shared in the coming weeks and months. To get started, practices can improve patient care by talking to and educating patients on diabetes prevention and management.
TPA developed easy to use diabetes resources for patient engagement that are available on the website. These include diabetes self-management and action plan forms, and a patient education poster sharing ways to manage diabetes. The poster, perfect for displaying in waiting areas and exam rooms, can be downloaded and printed by practices, or TPA practices can order high-quality posters via the online order form (these are complimentary to TPA practices). Stay tuned for more resources to help patients prevent and manage this disease!
