Reflections Of A Road Trip
I recently returned from a 7-day trip crossing all four US time zones. The amazing thing I saw in visiting several churches and ministries was the dedication and focus in getting the job done. Our country continues to linger with a struggling economy but TSF continues to see churches and ministries that are growing. To date we have not seen one late payment of the 16 churches that have loans with us! We know there are a number of struggling churches and we want to partner with them as well. We will do our best to come alongside them to work through these challenging times.
One of the key foundations of TSF is to assist our churches in structuring programs to incentivize them to pay off their debt early. Our loan program rewards our borrowing churches to pay down their principal faster than the amortization schedule. We have already seen senior pastors think creatively to challenge their people to give more to reduce their debt. This helps both the church, who pays off debt earlier, and TSF who can redeploy the funds back into new loans. |
Accomplishing Ministry in a tough economy:
TSF and South Lansing Christian Church
The recession in America has had a devastating effect on the economy. Recession has had an even deeper effect in Michigan which ranks near the top of states hit by the economic downturn. With the massive layoffs and closures of the automotive industry, which is a large part of the state's economy, Michigan was hit hard by the recession. The state unemployment rate hovers around 16%, making it the highest percentage it has been in more than 40 years. 2009 was particularly bad for Michigan, as the state lost more than 282,000 jobs. (Ann Arbor.com)
This is the climate that brought us to South Lansing Christian Church. One year ago, the leadership stood before the congregation with the news that they were in serious financial condition. They could no longer afford their building, and they were in danger of losing it. In addition, they were ready to lay off staff.
David Dummit, pastor of 2/42 Community Church, brought the announcement to the attention of Doug Crozier, CEO of The Solomon Foundation. Though Doug had never worked with the church, and TSF had nothing to do with their mortgage, he rushed to Michigan to meet with the leadership of the church.
The vision, creativity, and people skills that Doug Crozier possesses provided the catalyst to set a new course for South Lansing Christian Church. Frank Weller writes, "The Solomon Foundation crafted a carefully thought out gift/lease arrangement. They negotiated a discount and paid off our mortgage and we gifted our building to them. The result? We went from a $15,500 a month mortgage payment to a $7,500 a month lease payment. We were the first church that The Solomon Foundation did this with. God is, indeed, doing exceedingly abundantly beyond all we can ask or imagine!"
Renewed spirit within the leadership, created renewed faithfulness within the body. Weller continues in a letter to the church, "Our prayer as a staff and leadership has been that we would develop a culture of generosity at South Lansing Christian Church. And that is happening! Because of your faithful giving, we are nearly at budget in giving for the year. Because of that, we are able to complete some badly needed maintenance projects. Because of your faithful giving we've blessed dozens of families with food or gas or the payment of a bill. We've blessed students by helping them attend youth conferences. We've fully funded each of our missionaries and have even used some extra mission funding for special mission projects. On top of that, we are putting $500 a week into a reserve fund so we have funds for future ministry opportunities or for unexpected expenses."
When was the last time your financial institution received a letter that ended with, "Thank you. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you, thank you, thank you." |
A Success Story In the Making In May TSF closed a $4.7 million for New Day Christian Churchin Port Charlotte, FL. New Day is a great example of our commitment to work with struggling churches. New Day built a new building just before the economic downturn. Florida has some unique problems, being one of the hardest hit states and the issue of constant peaks and valleys in income due to snowbird migration. Their struggles led to a decline in vision. However, renewal is on its way. A year and a half ago the leadership called Rusty Russell as the new senior pastor. Rusty and the leadership set out on a new mission and vision at New Day. The church has experienced a major turnaround in growth and outreach. They are making a significant impact on their community. TSF caught their vision, and has stepped in to restructure their loan to help insure long-term growth. TSF is pleased to have New Day as one of its newest ministry partner! |

Increased Loan Demand at TSF
Our current loan demand is at an all-time high. Two of our construction projects have recently been completed. We are funding 4 other construction loans over the next several months with outstanding commitments of $12 million. In addition, we have 2 permanent loans to fund this summer and currently have loan requests from 7 churches that are in process.
