Kennedy Plaza Just Got a Little More Beautiful
Artists Liz Potenza, April Franklin, Jackson Morley, Frank Barada and Tim Ferland closed out the 2012 calendar with an enormous Public Project installation in Kennedy Plaza. They designed, fabricated, and installed a 385 foot sculptural, one-of-a-kind, fence that stretches around the Bank of America Skating Center.
The fence isn't just an aesthetically appealing interpretation of the iconic Rhode Island wave that's become symbolic of our state, it also incorporates interactive elements designed to house rotating artwork.

This project garnered a lot of attention from the press and the community at large, and we're so happy that it's been well received. The Providence Journal featured the team and the fence in a recent article, which you can read by clicking here.

New Video featuring Camp Metalhead
Do you remember back to last summer when our Camp Metalhead participants joined forces with a youth team from Groundwork Providence to create and install public artwork at Roger Williams National Memorial? The Metalheads' designed and built a speakers corner for the park which commemorates our state's long-standing tradition of freedom of expression.
If your memory of this unique program is a little fuzzy, you're in luck! An inspiring video was recently released that features the program participants talking about their experience working with metal, the environment, and the National Memorial.

Focus on Teamwork
Our Public Projects department wouldn't work without incredible teams of artists working together to design, build, and install one of a kind artworks across our state. We've compiled a selection of photos that capture teamwork in action.
Topher Gent and Jieune Reiner put finishing touches on a trash can for Main Street in Pawtucket.
Kinga Kurylonek and Randy Shapiro installing a trash can in Providence's Ward 6.
Jacqueline Onasile and Frank Barada installing a fence at William D'abate Elementary. |
| Yardie Photo of the Month |
|
This month's Yardie photo shows our furnace, Hoss, buried in snow during a recent blizzard. Anna Shapiro, who you may know as the Master of Ceremonies at the Halloween Iron Pour, captured the wintery wonderland that our common space became during the snow storm. When in use, Hoss is filled with molten iron emanating temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees, in a blizzard Hoss is basically a giant popsicle.

Do you have a photo from a Steel Yard course, event or public project? Send it in and it may be featured in the next edition of the Yardie Photo of the Month. Send all submissions to Islay, or tag us on Facebook, and please include a brief description.
