Nicole Shahinian Named as Triangle School's Educational Services Professional of the Year

Nicole Shahinian was honored at the February 28th Township Committee Meeting for being named Educational Services Professional of the Year for Triangle Elementary School for 2017. Mrs. Shahinian is described as a talented, devoted, selfless, knowledgeable and kind advocate for her students as well as her colleagues.

Mrs. Shahinian, is a Speech and Language Pathologist, has been a member of the Hillsborough School District faculty since 2008.  Mrs. Shahinian can also be found behind the camera, recording and directing video productions at Triangle School for both students and staff.

Triangle School is proud to have Mrs. Shahinian as their Educational Services Professional of the Year.
Christina Simons Named as HMS Teacher of the Year

At a the February 28th Township Committee Meeting, Christina Simons was presented with a proclamation for receiving the honor of being named Hillsborough Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2017.  Mrs. Simons creativity, passion and dedication make her a hero to both her students and colleagues.

Mrs. Simons, a Literacy Teacher on Team 8B at Hillsborough Middle School, has been a member of the Hillsborough School District faculty since 2002. Among her many accomplishments, in 2006, Mrs. Simons established Hillsborough Middle School's "ShakesPeer" Society, a program in which students perform the works of William Shakespeare,  and has continued to direct this program for the past 10 years.

Hillsborough Middle School is proud to have Mrs. Simons as their Teacher of the Year.
Sunnymead Elementary Holds Family Reading Night

On Thursday, March 2nd, Sunnymead Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day by holding a Family Reading Night. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

The children enjoyed being read to by some important members of the community including Committeeman Doug Tomson, Police Chief Darren Powell, and Route 206 Firehouse Vice President Mohammed Kashab.

Hillsborough Township Clean Communities Program Makes a Donation to the Central Jersey Stream Team
$400 Donation to Purchase Supplies

Mayor Carl Suraci and Department of Public Works Director Rich Resavy, who is also the Clean  Communities Coordinator for Hillsborough Township were joined by representatives from the  Central Jersey Stream Team for a check presentation at Tuesday's meeting.

"Through grant funding available from New Jersey Clean Communities, we are able to make this  donation to Central Jersey Stream Team to be used for future projects within Hillsborough  Township," announced Mayor Carl Suraci.

Jens Riedel, P.E., President of Planning and Grants for the Central Jersey Stream Team accepted  the donation and provided the details regarding the future clean up area within Hillsborough  Township, which entailed the Hillsborough side of the river embankment along the Neshanic  River and Bridge area.

"The exceptional volunteer spirit in Hillsborough is an extraordinary asset to our community and through the program, as such it is only fitting that we take the time to recognize those individuals who give so freely of themselves in the many selfless ways in support of our community," stated Mayor Carl Suraci.

Municipal Complex Offers Guest Wireless Network
Free Wifi Available at Township

"The Municipal Complex is now equipped with Wifi access for visitors to access online and view data while visiting the Municipal Departments," announced Mayor Carl Suraci. 

Late last year, a contract was awarded for  complimentary  wifi network services for visitors.

Hillsborough - NYC Bus Service

Suburban Transit/Coach USA offers Express Service to New York City from Hillsborough.  Park for free in the Park & Ride lot at the Hillsborough Promenade shopping center (near Kohl's). Buses depart each weekday at 6:00 am, 6:30 am, 7:00 am and 7:30 am.  Return service departs New York at 4:30 pm, 5:00 pm., 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

Spring Soccer and Softball Registration
Believe it or not, Spring is right around the corner!  The Spring Soccer and Softball League registration deadlines are both  March 10 .  Soccer leagues are open to children ages 3 to grade 12, and softball leagues are open to girls in grades K to 8.  Full information and registration are available on .

Run Around the Park  - April 23rd
The 4th Annual Run Around the Park will be  Sunday, April 23 . Join us for a family-fun day and non-competitive, recreational fun run at the park!  Why run around one park, when you can run around two?  The 3-mile course begins at Ann Van Middlesworth Park and continues to Woodfield Park before returning to AVM.  Pre-registration is required and available on the Parks & Recreation website.  All participants who pre-register before  March 31st  will receive the official t-shirt! 

Summer Camp Registration
Summer Recreation Camp registration begins on Friday, February 17.    Camps for 5 to 11-year-olds are held at Auten Road and Amsterdam Schools.  Camp for 12 to 14-year-olds will be held at Hillsborough Middle School.  Tiny Camp for 4 and 5-year-olds will be at Hillsborough Elementary School.    Camps begin on  Monday, June 26  and run for 8 weeks through  August 18 .  Information and registration is available on the Parks & Recreation website.

Shop Hillsborough Program

The Shop Hillsborough Reward Program combines saving and shopping. Simply present your Shop Hillsborough Reward Card to a participating merchant at the time of purchase and a property tax credit will automatically be applied to your property tax bill. Not a property owner? Join the program to receive an annual rebate check. 

To get started, stop by the Administration Office in the Municipal Building to pick up a card.  Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

News From Somerset County
Volunteers Sought to Lead "Project Healthy Bones" Classes
Register by March 17

Are you looking to improve your own health and well-being while serving as a role model for others? If so, you can help people who have, or are at risk of getting, osteoporosis by volunteering to become a Project Healthy Bones Peer Leader.

Dependable men or women age 60 and above who have good communication and interpersonal skills and who are able to perform low-level endurance exercises are encouraged to register by Friday, March 17. Interested volunteers are encouraged to share the opportunity with friends and family, as the program is co-facilitated.

To become a Peer Leader, volunteers must attend two mandatory train-the-trainer sessions, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, and Wednesday, March 29. Peer Leaders are expected to facilitate at least one Project Healthy Bones workshop series per year.

The free training will be conducted at the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater, located at 876 E. Main St. (next to TD Bank Ballpark). Lunch will be provided. Call (908) 704-6346 for more information.

Awareness Month

The Somerset County Board of Freeholders and the Morris-Somerset Regional Chronic Disease Coalition (RCDC), along with its partners, are encouraging residents to get screened for colorectal cancer and to make good food and lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.

A proclamation declaring March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month was presented at the Feb. 28 freeholders' meeting.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer affects both men and women, is the second leading cancer-related killer in the United States and is the third most common cancer in men and women.

Somerset County Freeholder Patricia Walsh, liaison to the County Commission on the Status of Women, joins the Commission in announcing the 2017 Outstanding Women in Somerset County award winners. To see photos of the winners, visit

"We have many women in Somerset County doing amazing things every day," she said. "It is most appropriate that during Women's History Month, we take the time to publicly recognize them and say thank you."

The Outstanding Women in Somerset County awards dinner will be held March 10 at The Imperia in Franklin.

Makers Create at the Library
2017 marks the third annual New Jersey Makers Day

To celebrate making and maker culture, residents throughout New Jersey will come together on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 in libraries, schools, museums, colleges, makerspaces, businesses and other community locations for the third annual New Jersey Makers Day.

This year, Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's 10 library branches will have a wide
variety of New Jersey Makers Day programs for the community to enjoy.

On Friday, March 24:  At SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library Branch from 
10-11 a.m.
The Three Little Pigs: Maker Day Edition (2-6 years old)
First we'll read the story of The Three Little Pigs. Then we'll create houses made of straw, sticks, and bricks (Legos) to see if they can withstand the "Big Bad Wolf" from blowing them down.
