News From Somerset County
Somerset County Freeholder Peter Palmer Will Read to Children for National Ag Day

Freeholder Director Peter Palmer has announced that he will visit Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's Bound Brook Memorial and Hillsborough Library branches to celebrate National Agriculture (Ag) Day this March.

National Ag Day recognizes and celebrates the abundance provided by agriculture. 2017 marks the 44th annual National Ag Day and, together with the Somerset County Agriculture Development Board and Freeholder Palmer, SCLSNJ will mark the occasion with two family-friendly programs for the community.

On March 4, 10:30 a.m. - noon at SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library branch and March 21, 7-8 p.m. at SCLSNJ's Bound Brook Memorial Library branch, Freeholder Palmer will read a fun farm-related story.  Program participants will then paint mural boards representing this year's Ag Day theme: "Food For Life." The Somerset County Agriculture Development Board staff will assemble the completed boards into raised bed vegetable planters which will be located throughout Somerset County, including SCLSNJ's Bound Brook Memorial and Hillsborough Library branches. The harvest will be donated to local food banks.

Have You Checked Your Well Water this Year?

In recognition of Groundwater Awareness Week, the  Somerset County Board of Freeholders and  Department of Health want to remind homeowners with private wells about the importance of regularly testing their drinking water. In partnership with the Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), information about wells and water sampling will be available from March 6 to 10 in the lobbies of the County Administration Building at 20 Grove St. and the Human Services Building at 27 Warren St.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends testing your household well every year for coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH levels - substances that are easily detected through laboratory testing. Testing more often is recommended if anyone in your household is pregnant, for families with infants and young children, after any repairs to the well and anytime there is a change in the odor or taste of the well water.

Freeholder Patricia L. Walsh, public health and safety liaison, urges residents to contact their local health officer for testing guidance based on water quality trends specific to their neighborhood. Even in areas with no known problems, it is recommended that all well owners conduct a full range of tests at least once. This will help establish a record of your water quality, which may be helpful with resolving future problems.
