This Week's Commentary

The Very Rev. Troy D. Mendez, Dean

July 6th, 2017

Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
   today I declare that I will restore to you double.   Zechariah 9:12

Where has the time gone? The year 2017 is now over half over! What happened to the new year's resolutions we set in January? Some of them we've kept. Many of them, perhaps, we don't remember at all.

Summertime in Phoenix can seem like a middle season -- the in-between times -- a time to re-group, to re-think priorities, and to focus on maximizing our own "off-season." How to actually do this is tricky. At times, when people feel over-worked, doing nothing seems like the best thing to do, but sociology actually says otherwise. How we use leisure time can either greatly benefit us, or have only a temporary effect.

Sociologists say there are two types of leisure: casual and serious. Casual leisure pursuits are short lived, immediately gratifying, and often passive; they include activities like going out with friends, online shopping, and binge-watching TV. While these are fun in the short-term, they do not contribute to long-term happiness or long-term life satisfaction. Another type of pursuit is needed.

They other type of leisure is often called serious leisure. A much more structured approach, serious leisure creates spaces for "self-actualization," for times when people can reflect more deeply on who they are and how they have been "fearfully and wonderfully made" in God's image. A good weekend isn't about turning off the brain and checking out. Instead, it's about corralling that precious free time for meaningful pursuits-the harder the quest, the more rewarding the bounty. When you spend your time in serious leisure, you pursue the things in life that you dream about. You pursue the things that matter to your heart.

The brothers of the Society of St. John the Evangelist look at the benefits of serious leisure in this way: "The fruits of our leisure time will prove whether we have hallowed or profaned our sabbath. If we have kept it holy we will resume our daily life reinvigorated and restored to ourselves."*

Our Gospel readings in the summer invite us to reimagine our life with God. Jesus invites us to follow our hearts, and to pursue the things that help us realize how we are also fearfully and wonderfully made in God's image. Our God is one who meets us wherever we are, in whatever condition we are in, and begins to transform us into people who walk with Christ into his new creation, the creation known as the Kingdom of God. Our God is one who restores.

How will you pursue the serious leisure of your heart's greatest desires?
How do you let God restore you?

In Christ's peace,
*Rule of the Society of St. John the Evangelist, page 91
