Naturopathic Clinic Thanks Dr. Harte

The UBNCM clinic received a sizable donation from the estate of the Dr. Elyssa Harte last month to be used towards the free healthcare services that the clinic offers at its 6 outreach clinics. The donation received from Dr. Harte's estate included medical reference books, as well as, over $10,000 of medicinal supplements. Dr. Harte often donated to these clinics during her over 20 years of practicing in Connecticut. And after her untimely passing earlier this year, her office staff, Barbara Morse and Laurie Beatty, contacted our Naturopathic Medicine clinic to offer these donations as a gesture of Dr. Harte's continual generous spirit and dedication to the Naturopathic profession. The outreach clinics are located in Bridgeport, Shelton and Danbury and serve communities that are underprivileged, uninsured and/or under-insured.

Your Oral Healthcare Team and The 100th Year Celebration of Dental Hygiene

A team is people working together for a common purpose. In dentistry, the purpose, or mission, of the team is to provide quality oral health care for the people of the community. In Connecticut, the oral health care team is composed of licensed professionals: the dentist and the dental hygienist; dental assistants who are on-the-job trained or formally educated; and dental laboratory technicians who are most often educated through formal education.

The Fones School of Dental Hygiene provides a rigorous two year clinical and academic curriculum accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation through the American Dental Association. The majority of Fones students earn the Bachelor's Degree through UB. To be licensed, graduates must pass a written national examination and a regional clinical board. Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH) must hold liability insurance and participate in yearly continuing education related to their specialized patient, clinical, and educational skills.

The University of Bridgeport is home to the first dental hygiene program in the world, established here in Bridgeport in 1912 by Dr. Fones. Irene Newman was the first dental hygiene graduate and earned the world's first dental hygiene license. She educated school children on dental health and taught new dental hygiene students alongside Dr. Fones. The students and faculty make annual pilgrimages to nearby Mountain Grove Cemetery to visit the gravesites of these two remarkable dental pioneers.

Bridgeport is home to a LOT of firsts - the wiffle ball, sewing machine, Subway sandwich - and ALSO to dental hygiene. Fones School of Dental Hygiene and dental hygienists around the nation and world are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Dental Hygiene Profession in 2013. Fones School hopes that you will join with us in celebrating good oral health through healthy habits and regular oral health care. Ask your dental hygienist or dental hygiene intern about our history when you visit the dental hygiene clinic for your oral examination and cleaning. We're proud of our heritage and want you to know about it too!

The dental hygiene clinic is open to the public of all ages - in the fall, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8-4, and Thursday PM 5-8, and in the spring with the addition of Wednesday and Friday.

LymeTop 8 Myths About Lyme Disease: Discover the Truth!

Living in New England, I come honestly by my paranoia regarding Lyme disease, especially after seeing so many ill with the myriad of symptoms encompassing this elusive disease. However, the scientist and physician inside dug much deeper to unearth how much of what we hear and see is fact versus myth regarding Lyme disease.

Myth #1: You only have Lyme disease (LD) if you have a BULLS-EYE rash. According to the CDC, 20-40% of patients do NOT have any rash and need further testing to properly diagnose the LD infection! Additionally, an annular red lesion appearing within several hours of a tick bite is considered a hypersensitivity reaction, not an EM rash that takes days to arise! To add to the confusion, STARI also presents with a bulls-eye rash, most likely because it's a relative of Lyme and may become more prevalent in CT as the "lonestar" tick migrates further northward. Other conditions causing a similar rash include erythema multiforme (hypersensitivity reaction to medications, herpes, or Mycoplasma) and erythema annulare centrifugum (reaction to infections, chemicals, cancer or autoimmune disease).

Chiropractic: A Sensible Alternative in these Economic Times

back pain chiro

Your health is adversely affected when insurance benefits or jobs are lost due to increasing stress levels. When someone can no longer afford to pay for health care, extremely difficult choices arise concerning which bills could be paid: rent, mortgage, education, food, gas, or health care. This can lead to anxiety, depression, headaches, insomnia, as well as generalized body aches and pains. Stress compromises your health by producing hormonal changes in the body, eventually leading to a break down of the immune system and physical deterioration. The severity of these emotional, mental, and physical ailments can be exacerbated by stress.

The University of Bridgeport's Chiropractic Outpatient Clinic offers a convenient, cost effective solution to families facing challenging economic circumstances. Chiropractic care may decrease stress and increase immune function. Chiropractic is a non-invasive, drugless, holistic approach for the treatment of musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal complaints, appropriate for every family member. A recent study[i] reported that access to chiropractic care was not only clinically beneficial but it also reduced overall health care costs. Another follow-up study[ii] concluded that chiropractors were able to formulate a diagnosis in 92% of the daily activities of primary care physicians as well as to make therapeutic contributions in more than 50% of those activities. A summary of 73 clinical trials involving spinal manipulation recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine[iii] attested to the effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating and managing back pain with none of those trials reporting any negative results.

Chiropractic treatment is rendered after patients undergo a thorough history and physical examination conducted by an intern operating under the supervision of an experienced chiropractic clinician. Chiropractic care incorporates lifestyle modifications, nutritional advice, and rehabilitative stretches and exercises with the treatment of various physical conditions.

If you, or a member of your family, are experiencing symptoms due to the increased stress created by the present uncertain economic times, please contact the courteous, professional  staff at the University of Bridgeport's Chiropractic Outpatient Clinic for an appointment today.

 Acupuncture for Seniors

"Experience is a comb which nature gives us when we are bald."

One of the appealing characteristics of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is that their foundations emphasize "Wisdom". Wisdom is a treasured value in Asian culture, both for the perspective it provides and the stability it affords. Traditional Chinese Medicine tries to maintain and vitalize the inherent wisdom of our "Elders" through emphasis on preventative therapy, exercise and lifestyle modification.

According to Chinese Medicine, as people age, two physical realities accompany Wisdom: accumulation of residual materials within the body that "clog" the smooth flow of energy and a natural decline of one's inherent energy source, the Kidneys. Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Chinese Massage Therapy offer countermeasures to offset accumulations of dampness and phlegm, stagnation of "sluggish blood" and the inevitable decline of Kidney energy.

Specific to the University of Bridgeport Acupuncture Clinic, Acupuncture, Tui Na (or Chinese Massage Therapy) and Dao Yin (or Chinese Exercise Therapy) work to disperse or drain residual excess, stimulate an individual's Qi or internal energy flow and supplement the loss of Kidney energy.

What do these abstract and poetic terms mean practically? Improved circulation for Diabetic Neuropathy and COPD, less pain for those afflicted with Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis and Skeletal dysfunction, and increased energy, focus, and stamina!

In a perfect world, the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine would be passed on in one's youth, so accumulations could be prevented and energy decline avoided. However, if it takes the Wisdom of our older generations to recognize that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine balances and conserves one's internal energy, so be it!

Please visit the University of Bridgeport Acupuncture Institute! Be a model of health and wellness for younger generations for years and years to come. They need your Wisdom!

UB Clinics Dispensary Center

The UB Clinics Dispensary Center provides the community with a dispensary that stocks both over-the-counter and prescription-only natural medicines.  The items available include vitamins, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and nutraceutical products (natural formulations).

We sell all products stocked in our inventory to clinic patients, and can provide them with a mail order service.  We only sell over-the-counter products to the general public and provide a limited amount of information on these products, while encouraging their use under the supervision of a student clinician and physician on staff in the Naturopathic clinic.

In order to purchase items that are prescription-only, persons seen as a patient in the clinic must have a dispensary prescription card completely filled out and signed by the prescribing clinician.
