August 1-11

Visit the Master Gardeners in the Flower Building Annex with their annual demo garden, this one featuring edible landscaping

Master Gardeners are at their demo garden 11am to 5pm throughout the fair. New this year, they are giving workshops throughout the day on both weekends. Schedule of MG workshops during the fair.

Come out and support local youth showing and selling their livestock at the  Junior Livestock Auction  and see their exhibits throughout the fair - in the flower buildings and in the exhibit buildings.

Come meet neighbors and others interested in cooperative burning and grazing in  Sonoma County. 

People from surrounding counties or other areas are welcome too. 
 
Please RSVP so we know how many people to anticipate and so you receive follow up information about this event.
 
What to bring? Sunglasses, sunscreen, a smile, and whatever salad, snack, or drink you'd like to share. Maybe a chair, too.

Vineyard Irrigation Water Usage

August 12, 9:30-10:30, Farm Bureau 

Purpose: To introduce a UC Cooperative Extension project to survey vineyard water use in Sonoma County. Topics include: 
  • Anonymous data collection 
  • Survey goals
  • Grower collaboration
Wildfire Home Hardening Workshop

August 17, 10am - 4pm, Sebastopol

Audubon Canyon Ranch is collaborating with the Goldridge Fire Protection district and UCCE to put on this workshop.

Learn how to make your home resilient against wildfire during this hands-on workshop:
  • Receive expert instruction on how to "harden" your home against the next wildfire.
  • Take a tour of a typical home in Sonoma County's W.U.I., with all of its classic issues.
  • Get hands-on experience correcting those issues.

Sep 14 - Nov 2, eight Saturday sessions
Pepperwood Preserve, Santa Rosa

In this 8-week course, participants meet every Saturday to explore Pepperwood and learn about different natural history topics. 

Each session runs from 9am-3pm and includes time in the classroom as well as time in the field. Participants will learn about Sonoma county's natural ecosystems, hydrology, soil science, mammology, ecology, ornithology, and geology. 

Those completing the 40-hour course along with their capstone project will receive their California Naturalist Certification through the UC certification program.

If you love to garden, learn about horticulture, and want to share your information with others, the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County offers you the opportunity to learn and to use your knowledge of gardening to serve the community.  

The UC Master Gardener program is a volunteer organization that provides education to home gardeners. Master Gardeners of Sonoma County have a deep commitment to community service and are willing to volunteer as agents of the University of California Cooperative Extension.  

Applications are due September 23 for the 2020 MG Training Class which will launch in January 2020 and run through May 2020.

Post Wildfire Land Stewardship Workshop

August 24,  10am at ACR Bouverie Preserve

Get hands on experience on how to steward your land after a severe wildfire event.

Participants will receive expert instruction on improving the ecological health and resiliency of fire-affected land and learn how to do it themselves or how to hire contractors to do the work on their land. 
  • Take a tour of the Bouverie Preserve -a landscape affected by the Nuns fire- and review Bouverie's postfire Forest Management Plan.
  • Get hands-on experience implementing Bouverie Preserve's Forest Management Plan. 
Range Tailgate 2: Cows, Compost + Carbon

August 27, Petaluma

Sonoma RCD and Sonoma Mountain Institute invite ranchers and prospective ranchers to come learn the latest findings from their Healthy Soils Demonstration Project. We'll also hear from professionals on how to determine the best type of compost for your ranch.
 
CA Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for projects funded by CAL FIRE

September 5,  10am at ACR Bouverie Preserve

This class will focus on CEQA processes related to CAL FIRE grant funding and private/ public agencies' legal obligations. It will cover CEQA's purpose, why it applies, basics (authority, summary, key terms, process), lead & responsible agencies, Senate Bill 901, exempt projects, environmental documents, document adequacy and archaeology. While not ideal for complete new-comers to CEQA, it may be appropriate for some. There will be a lot of detail shared and plenty of time for discussion.
