President's Message
It was a pleasure to see everyone at our first meeting of the year, on Friday, September 30th. Dr. Michael Scherer gave the most informative lecture, that most if not all of us have been to, on digital dentistry. Michael really laid out the details for us on the difference between the digital scanners out on the market today along with open source software, many of which you can download for free. I received many compliments on the quality of the material and the WOW factor that he provided. If you missed the event or want to learn more on 3D printing visit
www.MichaelSchererdmd.com.
Keeping with the spirit of Halloween, all treats and no tricks for this month.
The executive board is working on a group marketing strategy in order to promote UPCDA and its members. Our next meeting will be held on October 19, 2016 at Bon Appetit. Steve Mueller from Coastal Networks will be speaking on Internet security and HIPPA risk management for the dental office. Again this will be a very informative event and I look forward to seeing you there.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." (Aristotle)
Sincerely,
Emanuel Kontos

As we hear on the news all the time, computer system breaches are part of our connected world, and making sure we have the necessary "locks" in place is very important. The second part will have to do with HIPPA Compliance, Specifically the security rule and how it applies to your computer network. We will go over some of what is required, some of the recommendations, and steps to implement the changes on your network.
About the Speaker:
Stephen Mueller has been implementing computer networks for small/medium sized dental practices for over fifteen years, and has over twenty years experience in the IT Industry. He founded Coastal Networks, a Tampa based company in 2004 to specifically work with independent medical and dental practices. He has years of experience with a wide range of dental related technology products from many of the popular vendors.

Many provisions of the rule under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act went into effect July 18 and others take effect October 16. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights has said that it will not delay enforcement of the final rule. You can read more about their decision in ADA News.
If you are covered under this rule, you will need to prepare today. One step to take is to watch Understanding Section 1557, which featured top takeaways about the rule, along with questions from your fellow members. And don't forget the ADA has prepared a number of resources, including FAQs and a checklist, for members affected by this rule.

Community Dental Clinic
We are blessed in our area to have many options to give back to our community through volunteering our skills as dentists. The Community Dental Clinic is a volunteer-driven, free dental clinic that serves the low-income, uninsured/underinsured adults living in upper Pinellas County. The CDC's mission is to provide access to basic dental care to those that need it most. Located in Clearwater, the CDC caters to the preferred schedule and procedures the dental volunteer would like to perform. At present, the clinic offers new patient exams/x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions. The CDC is fully-equipped with everything needed to provide these services, and staffs an EFDA clinical coordinator to guide and assist you through your volunteer day.
