Volume 3, Number 6                                                                                                                        May  1, 2014

Another busy month in the tennis world as players travelled up and down the East Coast for the last of the spring tournaments. Boston hosted the U.S. 40s and 50s and the Ladies' Invitational, Washington played host to the Cherry Blossom Doubles and Aiken ran the Northrop Knox Doubles.

Looking ahead to May, all eyes will be on Australia as the 2014 World Championship kicks off next week in Melbourne. Camden Riviere, the current #1 player in the world, will challenge Rob Fahey - the World Champion - in a best of 13 sets battle for the title of World Champion. Fahey first won the title in 1994 and has successfully defended his title since. After months of preparation and challenge matches, it is sure to be an amazing contest of skill and determination. There will be a live video feed, details of which can be found below. Good luck to both players!

The summer season kicks off in June with the U.S. Professional Singles playing for The Schochet Cup in Newport. Other events in June include the Newport Handicap Doubles and the Junior National Championships in Washington.

In this month's edition be sure to read the latest pro tip from Ricardo Smith on racquet positioning. Did you know that June 20th is International Tennis Day? Protective eyewear - what's your view? Read about the Court Tennis for a Cure night in Newport and more. Finally this month, we're including a story about the U.S. Mixed Amateur Doubles and Anne Boleyn tournaments that were held in Chicago in February. Unfortunately the results were left out of the last newsletter - apologies to all - it's great to see so many new players from Chicago - both male and female!

The USCTA will hold its Annual General Meeting in New York on May 30. Details and proxies will be mailed to all current USCTA members.

Remember to set your alarm clocks for the World Championship next week!

Until next month...

Sincerely,

Jane Lippincott - Editor

NORTHROP KNOX
by Dacre Stoker
Dacre Stoker, Geoff Ellis, Jason Mengel, Linda Knox, Rakesh Jasani, Michael Sullivan & Rick Preston
The draw was a little lighter than in recent years, we had 13 teams in round robin pool play, assuring every team at least 2,  3 set matches before half of the draw moved on to quarter final knock out stage. The social events were well attended even if we had to move the Saturday dinner indoors.

On the opening Wednesday Charlie Bostwick and Dan Villiers sent shock waves thru the draw by posting a three set upset over M Sullivan and G Ellis 4-6 6-5 6-5. Villiers was all over the court blasting shots while Bostwick handled the role of guarding galleries and serving tightly. They made it to the quarter finals by getting one set of Motz and Carey in pool play before losing in a well fought match against Ben Cook and Amanda Avedissian 6-5 6-3.

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia held this year's 2014 US Amateur. Fourteen players came from three different countries to make it one of the strongest fields this event has seen in few years . Friday saw some solid tennis, but overall no upsets with all the matches being 2 sets. The Quarter finals saw some competitive Tennis with Jon Crowell taking Danny McBride in a great three set match. Rich Moroscak beat Drew McGowan in a close 6-5 6-4 show down meaning that Crowell would play the inform man of the moment Mark Mathias and leave Moroscak playing Pat Winthrop is the semi finals.

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS DAY
June 20, 2014

Next month will see the launch of an exciting, world-wide event: International Tennis Day. This is a grass-roots attempt, supported by the USCTA and the USCTPF, to raise the profile and catalyze interest in our game, to motivate current players and to mobilize new ones. Modeled on the successful World Squash Day, ITD is on Friday 20 June 2014. This day is the 225th anniversary of the Tennis Court Oath during the French Revolution; David's painting of that historic day remains perhaps the most iconic image of a tennis court. We are hoping that the forty-odd clubs around the world will celebrate ITD simultaneously with clinics, exhibitions, marathon matches, parties or whatever suits them. Each participating club receives a handsome, sturdy ITD banner (designed to fit in a grille) for free, courtesy of the Preservation Foundation and can upload photos in real time to the ITD website, Twitter and Facebook pages. TIPS FROM THE PROS
Racquet back, but waist high..
by Ricardo Smith

Now many of may prepare for your shot with your 'racquet back' but is it at waist height? In a game where the ball will often skid through the court it is important that your racquet is not only back but waist high. This will give you a much better chance of consistently striking through the line of the ball .
