The Hospitality Team invites you to join us in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, 6/23

On Sunday, June 23rd the Hospitality team invites you to enjoy coffee, tea, lemonade and snacks in the Fellowship Hall before the Annual Congregational Meeting. Beverages and snack items will be available from 10:00 am to 10:45 am when the Congregational Meeting begins in the sanctuary. After the Meeting we will have a lunch of pizza, compliments of Rev. Jaimie, fruits trays, and vegetable trays in the Fellowship Hall. Lunch will last from 10:45 am to 12:30 pm. Then we will reconvene in the sanctuary for the UUA General Assembly meeting. 5+ Seats for CPR AED Classes Available

The Safety Committee has funding for 5-7 church members to take an American Heart Association CPR & AED training class. Those who regularly attend worship service and are willing to perform the emergency medical response are especially encouraged to sign up! See Safety Chair, Shalin Mody, for additional details.

Way to Go!

Your generosity has helped local charities! Through our Share the Plate (STP) program, UUCH members donated almost $2300 to four local charities during this past church year (July 2023 through June 2024)! The local charities you supported this year include Kids to Love, Village of Promise, the North Alabama Coalition for the Homeless, and the Alabama Birth Center.

Upcoming STP recipients include Habitat for Humanity and New Futures. If you would like to nominate a local non-profit organization for the STP program, please contact social.justice@uuch.org.

UUCH Marching for Pride! Saturday, June 29, 2024



Join us as we march in the Rocket City Pride Parade to show our love and support for the LGBTQ+ Community. This year’s parade is Saturday, June 29th in the heart of downtown Huntsville. The parade starts at 10am for spectators but get there by 9am to line up and march with us. We will meet at the parking lot across from the downtown Huntsville Post Office on Clinton. There is plenty of parking and you will see all the exciting rainbows and floats lined up for the parade.

This is always a fun and colorful time for all ages so put on your yellow “Side with Love” t-shirt or your rainbow colors and come walk proudly behind our UUCH banner. A Club UU Thank You!

Many thanks to all who helped with our Club UU dance fundraiser. All attending enjoyed good food, games and lots of dancing and fun. And we raised $1000 for our church!

Poverty, by America: A Book Discussion

Sunday July 14 and August 11 @ 12:15 pm in ARE room

"To understand the causes of poverty, we must look beyond the poor. Those of us living lives of privilege and plenty must examine ourselves… Most government aid goes to families that need it the least. If you add up the amount that the government is dedicating to tax breaks — mortgage interest deduction, wealth transfer tax breaks, tax breaks we get on our retirement accounts, our health insurance, our college savings accounts — you learn that we are doing so much more to subsidize affluence than to alleviate poverty… And this is the way we designed it.” - Matthew Desmond

This exercise asks you to read Matthew Desmond’s highly celebrated book, Poverty, by America.

As the above quotation suggests, it is a book that challenges those of us in the middle and moderately affluent classes to look at the ways we knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. This is not a role we are used to. When it comes to economic injustice, we privileged liberals are much more comfortable naming the problems than being named as the problem.

But alongside that discomfort lies a feeling of being liberated. Desmond is not out to guilt his reader. Rather, his aim is empowerment and understanding. You will leave this book with more compassion, more commitment, and a clearer path forward.
