Upcoming Service

Resurrection? Are You Kidding?

Rev. Ruth Vann Lillian

10:45 a.m., Sunday, April 20th, 2025

Is there anything in the original Easter story for Unitarian Universalists? Can we who are so skeptical and scientifically-minded find anything in the concept of resurrection to embrace? Let's explore what that young radical rabbi of so long ago might still have to teach us and different ways of understanding the tales from the tomb.

This Sunday Events

Easter Event

Begins at 12:15

Music News

In most churches, Easter Sunday marks the return of the Alleluia in ritual and song. So it will be with the UUCH Choir on this Easter Sunday, as we’ll sing Thomas Benjamin’s Jazz Alleluia.

Choir rehearsal this Sunday will be at 10 am.

Nursery Care

Nursery care will be available during the service
from 10:30-12:15.

Little ones can be signed in and out upon arrival and departure in the RE wing.

This Week in Children's

and Youth's Religious Education (CYRE)

This week all ages will be dying easter eggs in preparation for the easter egg hunt after service! Please come in play clothes and ready for fun!

Note from Rev. Ruth

Well, Pilgrims, it's hard to believe that our time together is almost over! I will be with you for my final Sunday this week, and we will celebrate Easter as only UUs can! Rev. Jaimie will return in two weeks on May 4 with a big welcoming potluck and reception for her and her new husband, Will Simon! I know you will all be so excited to welcome her back!

It has been my honor and privilege to serve you for these four months! I have met and worked with some marvelous people, staff, and laity! I hope we may part with a mutual sense of gratitude for all the good we have shared and forgiveness for any mistakes that were made. After all, churches (and pulpits) are populated with human beings, not angels!

I will be available by email, phone, text, and Zoom through the end of this month, and I will be present remotely at several important regular meetings. So don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to serve you in my last weeks as your Sabbatical Minister.

I think the future looks bright for UUCH! I'm glad I got to be a part of your faith community!

In hope,

Rev. Ruth

Office Hours Week of April 14th

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg Hunt at UUCH!

Rain or Shine, you and your family are invited to spend Easter Sunday afternoon with your fellow UUs in a day of relaxation and fun while welcoming the beginning of spring.

What: Easter egg hunt

Who: Everyone is invited!

When: This Sunday, April 20th 12:15-3pm

Where: UUCH

Suggestions for what to bring:

  • Yourself and family
  • Eggs for the hunt
  • Goodies (finger foods) to share for munching
  • Lawn chairs and musical instruments

Fun for everyone. No children? No problem. We’re EGG-cited! We will be HOPPY to see you!

Whether you will be hiding the eggs, hunting the eggs, or just enjoying the

fun and fellowship, you are invited to bring your favorite savory and/or sweet finger foods to share, a lawn chair, a musical instrument, a game to play, or maybe even a good book, and join us for our UUCH Easter Event for all!

This event is sponsored by Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) and Hospitality as an all-church activity. All are welcome! Help with cleanup will be greatly appriciated.

Plant Tomatoes to Help Feed Our Hungry Neighbors

The raised bed gardens at the north end of the church are going to be planted this Saturday. We have 24 nice, big tomato plants that have been donated by a friend of the UUCH. The produce from these plants will be distributed through our little free food pantry. We have multiple varieties including several nice Heirloom kinds which will ripen at different times throughout the growing season. We are only going to grow tomatoes because vine-ripened tomatoes are among the great gifts of our hot summers, and tending a solitary crop is far easier for our volunteers to keep up with.

Planting begins at 2 pm on Saturday, April 19th. This is not a full-blown property work day, but many hands make light work. If you would like to help fill the Little Free Pantry with everybody’s favorite savory fruit, come on out. Coordinator for this activity is LaDawn Edwards. Call 319-431-7461 for more info or just show up.

Volunteers Needed!

Highlands Elementary is having another Book Fair April 28th to May 2nd, and we need YOU to volunteer. Highlands is our neighborhood Title 1 school, and our own Deborah Delacey is the librarian and Book Fair manager. A portion of the proceeds go back to the school to provide books and supplies to our local children struggling with literacy. If you are able to help or have any questions, please contact Deborah at deborah.delacey@gmail.com or text (818) 667-9094. Thank you!

It Is Time For Plants In Our New Garden -- Do You Have Some To Donate?

The next step for the Jane Welty Memorial Garden is the procurement of plants. We have timed this out really well because both the botanical garden plant sale and the Master Gardeners plant sale are this week. Selection of plants in a public garden with limited space is a complicated process. We want things that grow vigorously but are not invasive. We want things that support pollinators. We want things that don't need too much maintenance work like pruning and deadheading. We want plants that are native but sometimes the improved varieties are more disease-resistant. Most of all we want there to be something pretty all year round. There are pros and cons to each plant selection and they have to work in the amount of light, heat, shade, and water that we can provide.

If you have plants that you would like to donate, please call or text Melodie Brier 256-468-5465. Please do NOT just bring them to the church. Let us figure out how they fit in the space before you start digging.

Child Dedication this Mother's Day

On 5/11/25, Rev. Jaimie will offer Child Dedications during our Mother's Day service. Any families with babies or young children who would like to be blessed and dedicated, please send a note to Minister@uuch.org, and Rev. Jaimie will reach out when she is back from sabbatical.

Upcoming Social Justice Events

Your participation is needed! Below is a list of local social justice events sponsored by groups that UUCH and/or our members support.

Here are some standing opportunities to get engaged with local organizations:

  • First Stop:
  1. Provide a meal for unhoused people (https://firststoporg.galaxydigital.com/)
  2. Donate urgently needed items (https://firststop.org/category/needs-list/)
  3. Other volunteer opportunities (https://firststop.org/ways-to-volunteer/)

For more information about a particular event or to list an event, please email social.justice@uuch.org.

Little Food Pantry

Many of our neighbors and many unhoused people visit our LFP frequently. Consider buying a few extra cans of soup or veggies to contribute! For suggestions of what to donate (and what not to donate), check out this list: Pantry Food Items. Remember that many families don’t have the experience or the equipment to handle dried beans, and that the unhoused particularly benefit from cans that don’t require can openers. A little help from us can go a long way Please, if you are able to fill it up, note your name in the Sign-Up Genius. Also, you can bring non- perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
