Dr. Kristina Penniston will serve as the 2024 President of the Research on Calculus Kinetics (ROCK) Society.
Dr. Walid Farhat will serve as the incoming 2024 Wisconsin Urological Society (WUS) President beginning after their annual meeting in March.
Dr. Matthew Grimes has been nominated and selected to represent the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) at the Early Career Investigators Showcase at the annual American Urological Association (AUA) meeting in May.
Dr. David Jarrard was invited as Visiting Professor at UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles, CA in January. His lectures included "Exploiting ADT-induced epigenetic susceptibilities to improve prostate cancer outcomes" and "New developments in the management of advanced prostate cancer".
Dr. Daniel Shapiro has been selected to serve as Section Editor for the urologic oncology section for the journal "Surgical Oncology Insight".
Dr. Margaret Knoedler and colleagues performed the first robotic PCNL at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. The MONARCH™ Platform for Urology is a novel FDA-cleared flexible robotic platform that aims to simplify percutaneous access and efficiently treat renal stones. This was the first case in the Midwest and the first supine PCNL in Wisconsin. This was also the 14th case ever in humans with the MONARCH™ Platform.
UW Urology Ranked #4 in NIH Funding
Our research program has been ranked #4 in the nation for NIH funding in urology departments. This includes a new P50 Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) for novel prostate cancer treatments, a U54 O'Brien Center for benign urology research, and a U24 to lead CAIRIBU, which coordinates cooperative efforts of 15 academic centers with NIDDK K12, P20, and U54 grants for benign urology research. We also have a strong K12 Urologic Research Career Development Program that develops new physician and PhD researchers. Our faculty work with more than 10 PhD scientists, post-docs, and trainees on a vast array of extramurally funded research projects and clinical trials.
