"Be Subject to One Another"
Rev. Kimberly Debus
10:45 AM
In these tumultuous times, it is easy to be unkind to those we disagree with. Yet there is a prophetic as well as a pastoral value to kindness, thoughtfulness, and helpfulness--we'll explore how our principles and sources call us to treat others.

Dear UUCH
This Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 1:00pm we are holding a Memorial Service to celebrate the life and grieve the loss of long time church member Jack Long. This will be a very special day, both because it will be a chance to remember Jack, and because it will be our first outdoor in-person service since we last gathered in March of 2020. Here is our plan on how to make this service safe and meaningful both for our community, and for Jack’s family who we warmly welcome as our guests.
Our Plan for Covid Safety:
Health: Please Do NOT attend if you have tested positive for Covid-19, if you feel sick (have a fever, cough, etc.), or if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 within 10 days.
- Hygiene: Hand Sanitizer will be available; please wash your hands regularly
- Distance: Chairs will be spaced out on the lawn; we recommend that families and groups that already spend in-person time together sit in pods and maintain distance from other pods.
- Masks: Masks are not always necessary in outdoor environments; however, the CDC recommends that masks be worn outdoors in areas where Covid spread is High. Madison County has a high rate of transmission by both the CDC and CovidActNow numbers and so it is strongly recommended, though not required, that all attendees wear a mask.
- Vaccination: As a religious community, UUCH puts our faith in the science and efficacy of vaccines. We encourage all eligible attendees to be vaccinated.
Restrooms: Men’s, Women’s, and Gender Neutral Restrooms are available in the RE Wing. Masks are required to enter our building.
Other Logistics and Things to Know:
-
Parking: Everyone should plan to park on the North Wing side of the building!
-
Chairs: We will set up several rows of chairs at the front of our outdoor space, for the family, out of town guests, and anyone who needs these chairs for accessibility. If you are able to, please bring your own lawn chair and plan to set up your lawn chairs in socially distanced family/social pods behind the preset chairs.
-
Volunteers: We still need volunteers to help with set up and help make our church welcoming for this special service. You can sign up HERE.Volunteers helping with set up are asked to arrive between 11:30 and Noon to ensure that everything is ready. Ushers and Greeters can plan to arrive at 12:15.
-
Inclement Weather Plan: Given the current forecast, we are very hopeful for a beautiful sunny Saturday. With the tech equipment that we have, we cannot have an outdoor service while it’s raining or just after a heavy rainstorm. If it is raining, I will offer an indoor service in our sanctuary for Jack’s family and out of town guests. Friends from UUCH are asked to stay home and instead participate in a Zoom Memorial service from 3-4pm. If it starts pouring halfway through the outdoor service, I will count on all of your help to quickly move our technology and chairs back inside. Obviously, none of these alternatives are ideal, so let’s all pray for sunshine!
I know there are a lot of rules and logistics here, and some unknowns. But my hope for us all is that, through this gathering, we are able to find some peace and gratitude for this beloved community, and remember fondly our dear friend Jack Long.
Blessings,
Rev. Jaimie

Adult Religious Education
Book Discussion
Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life
Join UUCH Adult Religious Education on November 7th and Nov. 14th at 5:00 p.m. for a Zoom Discussion of Richard Rohl’s book, "Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life.”
This intriguing book explores a fresh way of thinking about spirituality that grows throughout life. Father Rohr draws on Buddhism, Jungian thought, twelve step programs, and Christianity to propose that what looks like falling down can largely be experienced as "falling upward." Crisis, sorrows, sadness, pain, loss, and struggle are the elements of spiritual maturity that must be experienced in life in order to fully comprehend, contemplate, and appreciate the ups of the second half of life. When we break away from the norms and practices of our family and community, and leave our comfort zone and venture out, we can become a generative, developed person, seeing our life as more participative and joyful.
We will meet on two consecutive Sundays, November 7th and 14th, at 5 p.m. for a discussion of this inspiring book. Everyone is welcome. Brad Korb and Teri Thomas will facilitate. Registration is not required, but if you are coming, please drop us an email at Adult.RE@uuch.orgg so we can plan for the group. Adult RE has some copies of the book available for check out, if you would like to borrow one, just let us know via the email above.

“New UU” Class
October 23rd
10:00 AM – 11:45 AM
What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? Join Rev. Jaimie, the Adult Religious Education Committee, and the Membership Committee as we offer a two-part series that explores important themes in UU congregational life.
We will discuss our worship and theology, history, covenant and polity, faith development, social justice, and membership. This program is particularly focused on introducing newcomers to UUCH, but those of you who have been here for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Everyone is welcome!
Mark your calendars now for the Saturday morning of October 23rd at 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. for this chance to learn, share, and be together. We will meet via Zoom, and we ask people to register to prepare for the number of participants. Contact Adult.RE@uuch.org to register or if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you there!

Beep Beep! It's Halloween!
Calling all Ghouls, goblins, superheroes, literary characters, and oversized animals—UUCH is excited to announce a new version of our Halloween party: Trunk or Treat! On Sunday, October 31 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM anyone with a car, truck, or expressive bicycle can decorate their vehicle for the specific purpose of entertaining the younger members of our church community (particularly those too young to fully participate in our 5th principle).
And, in the spirit of abundance that prevails during harvest time, we ask each participant to bring at least 1 can or other donation to the Little Free Food Pantry, in addition to traditional Halloween offerings.
Candy donations are accepted on campus during office hours from 11am- 3pm Tuesday- Thursday.
You can find additional information and safety guidelines here.
To register as a "Trunker" or "Treater" please click here or email the office at uuch@uuch.org!
