We continue our monthly theme of BECOMING, focusing this week on our care for the Earth and our hope for the future. YOUUTH will have some special time dedicated to creative planning for the YOUUTH-led CYRE worship on May 23. Come on to YOUUTH group and let your light shine!
VIRTUUAL CYRE meets from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM. Children, youth, and families are all invited!
YOUUTH Group (grades 7-12) meets from 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM.

Letter from the Minister
Dear UUCH,
What a week, friends. Like many of you, I was so heartened to see a moment of accountability in our deeply broken justice system this week, with the guilty verdict in the Chauvin case. In every way this is too little too late, and still a moment for gratitude. Yet we know that violence and hatred continue. We mourn the death of Ma'Khia Bryant, and our hearts are with her family and the Columbus community. As people of faith, we continue to seek a world with more justice, more accountability, and no more senseless death.
Beyond that message, I wanted to reach out to you with some information about worship and schedules over the next weeks.
Next Sunday, April 25th at 10am, we will be joining UUs all over Alabama and the gulf coast of Florida for a very special combined service. Ministers, Religious Educators, Musicians, and Regional Staff from our area, are working hard to create this combined worship experience. I and Rev. Alice Syltie, your former minister, are offering the sermon this time, and our music director, Jonathan Corey, has put together a beautiful combined choir piece for the service. It will be a beautiful service. Join me in watching it live on the Birmingham Church’s Youtube Channel (specific link in OOS or find it here: https://bit.ly/UUCBSundayServices).
Finally, a note about my hours. I am taking vacation time beginning today, April 22nd until the 30th, and I will be out of the office and not responding to emails. During this time, I continue to be available for pastoral care and support in emergencies, like a death or a serious hospitalization. You can reach out to Holly in the church office and ask her to call me or you can find emergency information in my out-of-office email.

Property Work/Fun Day this Saturday
10:00 AM
This Saturday, weather permitting, we'll have a Property Work/Fun Day. Even though the building is closed for group activities, to ensure that it will be ready when those resume there are maintenance tasks that need to be performed. And even in these pandemic times, small groups have met outside in front of the church and the courtyard, so maintaining these areas is important, as well.
We'll finish the raised beds in the garden, replace lights and filters, do some cleanup outside, and prepare the corner RE classroom ceiling for painting.
For most tasks no special skills are needed, just willing hands for a couple of hours, to ensure that the building is ready for when activities resume.

Time: 10:00 am to noonish
Bring: work gloves if you have them (but some will be available if you don't have any)

Little Food Pantry
The Little Food Pantry needs your help. The pantry is being heavily used and church members have been generous in filling it. While the weather is still cool, fresh fruits and veggies are always welcomed, apples, bananas, carrots, taters, onions, etc. For some reason, black beans, lentils, and chickpeas aren't well-liked. Let's keep helping our neighbors! A big thanks!

Paul and Bridgit lit a candle of joy: Paul and I are totally enjoying the beauty of the flowers in this spring.
Jessica Schulz lit a candle of joy: I'm enjoying the beautiful colors of spring!
Sarah S. Rody lit a candle of concern: I have a concern about my mom. She's been in the hospital since Tuesday. She received a stent in a coronary artery on Wednesday and started kidney dialysis yesterday.
Paul and Bridgit lit a candle of concern: About the continued divisions and intolerance of our nation.
Rachael Scheib lit a candle of joy: This church again fills my need for service with loving-kindness.
Kathy Fisher lit a candle of gratitude: Thankful my brother-in-law is recovering well from his recent surgery and so glad to have my sister staying with me. And yesterday, my granddaughter came for the day. We talked nonstop for 7 solid hours. Wonderful connection!
Barbara Hitt lit a candle of joy: That I spent last week in Wyoming with my two sisters who I had not seen since my Mom died 4 years ago.
Michaela Whitehead lit a candle of concern: That our pediatrician shares that COVID-19 numbers are again on the rise in our community since Easter gatherings in person and the mask mandate ending 4/9. Praying for health and healing for the families now facing COVID-19.
Theresa and Tim Miller lit a candle of concern: For the failing health of my oldest sister, Romey, in WV.
