In Honor of

Reverend Al ic e
As you all know, Reverend Alice has announced her plans to retire at the end of this church year. Although she will be with us until the end of July, we plan to start celebrating her a little early, to begin the process of saying goodbye to someone who has made such an impact on our church and to allow for participation from members before we all embark on our summer vacations.

Please mark your calendars for a celebration of Reverend Alice's legacy of service and leadership on April 22nd. We will also have a love offering for Reverend Alice.

Please sign up to lend your assistance to making this day memorable.

We will have an opportunity during that worship service to look back at the many gifts Reverend Alice has given our church. You will not want to miss it!
WE CAN DO IT!

Embracing Our Liberal
Christian Roots

The Reverend Alice Syltie

Our Unitarian Universalist roots are deep within the tradition of liberal Christianity. Among the sources from which we draw are Jewish and Christian teachings, which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves. How might our heritage and these teachings ground us and guide us in the divisive times we face today?

Suggestions for this service come from Lynsie Lamitie, who won the bid for sermon topic of your choice at the most recent UUCH Service Auction.
  This Sunday in Children and
Youth Religious Education (C Y RE)
CYRE groups will meet in their regular rooms to continue their exploration of Living Our Principles.

Nursery care (ages 0-3) will be offered as usual.

If you haven't already, please register your child/youth for this year's CYRE program. For more information, contact Erin Reid, Director of Religious Education, or Audrey Fox, CYRE Chair.
The Spiritual Practice of
UU Facilitation
Thursday, April 12th

Facilitation is the art of engaging group participants in a cooperative process. It is a leadership tool essential in our Unitarian Universalist context. A group facilitator helps create a safe and comfortable environment where all participants may feel heard and valued. Regardless of the purpose for which a group gathers, facilitation taps into the energy and creativity of the group, empowering each person to give expression to their own potential.
Join us as we learn together some of these practices in an Introduction to Facilitation class on Thursday, April 12th 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Adult Religious Education Room

Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you have led many groups or are just beginning. We can all learn more about creating good spaces for deep, productive human conversation. The class will be facilitated by Reverend Alice Syltie and Nancy Finley. Please let Nancy know if you need childcare, at least a week before the event so it can be arranged.

Hope to see you there!

Social Saturday
on April 14th
Let's Do Lunch!

The premier Social Saturday will be held this Saturday, April 14th, 11:00 to 1:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall at UUCH. This event is being held in response to members' requests for more "in-reach" in our church community.

There will not be any particular agenda, just a casual social time for people to get together, share a meal, and chat--maybe find out that they share a common interest, maybe one has a need that another could meet, maybe they like to eat out at a favorite restaurant but want a companion, maybe they like to go to sci-fi movies, or enjoy playing cards, or like to go hiking, or fishing, or canoeing, or bungee-jumping. Anything can happen when UUs get together!

So plan to come and join the group. It will be a potluck, of course. So cook up your favorite dish to share or drop by a store to pick up a favorite dish.

Everyone is welcome, but seniors are especially encouraged to come, and perhaps a Senior Circle will develop at UUCH. It will also be an opportunity for new members to meet some folks and feel like part of our UUCH family.

The event is sponsored by the Hospitality, Membership, and Care Committees, and if enough interest is shown, it will become a monthly event. Hope to see you Saturday!
All-ages Movie Night
April 14th at 6:30 p.m.

The Transformers and Searchers Religious Education (RE) Groups will join with the Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) Program to host our  Spring All-ages Movie Night on Saturday, April 14th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will be viewing Jim Henson's The Tale of the Bunny Picnic. Join us as we watch Bean, a young bunny, learn that sometimes the littlest bunnies can make biggest changes.

We will be collecting donations for A New Leash on Life. Click here for a complete list of items.

Please bring your favorite snack to share. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie starts at 6:30 p.m.
Talk To the Board
Sundays, April 15th and April 29th

As you have read in previous newsletters, the Board is in the process of applying for an Interim Minister to join us after Rev. Alice's retirement. This is a UUA-wide process where congregations seeking an Interim Minister are matched with available, trained Interims. The possibility of obtaining an Interim Minister is an exciting opportunity for a congregation to review, reorganize, and renew in consultation with a trained professional guiding the transition process. An Interim enables a congregation to assess strengths, needs, and challenges before calling a settled minister. Used wisely, it could help us build structures and inspire visions that expand us into new levels of effectiveness and growth. This type of examination is particularly useful when a congregation is growing from a small-size church to a mid-size church like we are.

Obtaining an Interim Minister requires a serious commitment of time and resources for a congregation and we want to make sure that everyone is familiar with the process and purpose as we move forward. Please join us on either April 15th or April 29th to "Talk to the Board." Members of the Board will be available for informal discussions about our search for an Interim. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We will meet in the Adult Religious Education Room immediately following Sunday services.

Wednesday Night Film Series - Emerging Beyond our Cultural Limitations  weathered-movie-reel.jpg

Wednesday, April 18th
7:00-8:00 p.m.

Our church theme for this month is Emergence.  In keeping with that theme, Adult RE will have a showing of the video, Dreams from Endangered Cultures. With stunning photos and stories, National Geographic Explorer and anthropologist, Wade Davis, celebrate the extraordinary diversity of cultures and belief systems. There is a web of adaptive choices humans have made around the world; r ecognizing this can help us "emerge" outside our culture's limited view which is just one model of reality.

Join us on April 18th 7:00 p.m. (right after the  Wonderful Wednesday Supper ) until  8:00 p.m. After the short film, you will have a chance to join your church friends in a good discussion about the film. Everyone is welcome and childcare will be provided.

Annual Congregational Meeting
May 6th, 2018 at 12:30 p.m.

After Sunday services on May 6th, we will be holding our Annual Congregational Meeting.
This date represents a change from the calendar, for which the Board apologizes. To meet both the terms of our bylaws and the deadlines for applying for an Interim Minister, we have had to revise our planned schedule.  Please make every effort to attend; we need a quorum.

Per our bylaws, we will send electronic copies of the mailing containing the information for the meeting to all members, using your newsletter preferences as a guide. If you currently get a paper copy of the newsletter, you will receive a paper copy of the agenda and other information. If you receive the newsletter electronically, you will receive the materials electronically. Please make sure that the church office has your correct email address.

If you would prefer to receive the Annual Meeting materials in a different format than you get the newsletter, please notify Willette Battle in the church office ( [email protected] or 256-534-0508) as soon as possible. Thank you!
Interim Ministry:
An Exciting Opportunity!

The UUA has developed Interim Ministry to help congregations challenge themselves to change and develop in ways they might not have anticipated--to support our role in producing the Beloved Community. We're eager to move forward with one for UUCH! Please watch this fifteen-minute video to help clarify what we might expect from our experiences with an interim minister: The Interim Opportunity

UUCH 2018 Annual
Budget Drive Concluding!

Currently, members and friends have made pledges for the upcoming year that exceeded $192,000! We continue to "Pave the Path" to an exciting future.

If you have not given us your pledge form, it's not too late! We'd still like to grow that total a bit more for next year's budget which will be presented to the congregation in May.

Thanks to everyone who have made pledges. Remember the church fiscal year will begin on July 1st. As we are "Paving the Path" for growth and transitions, every pledge matters! All pledges, regardless of size, are important and appreciated.
