returnBuilding Our Future Together!

The 2019 UUCH Annual Budget Drive (ABD) has started with the theme of "Building Our Future Together!" This year we embark on our search for a new settled minister and build on the wise guidance we have been receiving from our current interim minister, Rev. Ed Brock. What an exciting time for UUCH!

Your support, my support, and all our support together are what make current and future programming possible at the church.

This year, we are introducing Stewardship Celebrations, which are shorter, larger, less formal cottage meetings that are scheduled from late March through early April in the homes of UUCH members. These meetings are here to give you an opportunity to hear directly from Rev. Ed about stewardship, our mission, and our upcoming search for a settled minister. You will also have an opportunity to complete your pledge forms while you enjoy food and fellowship with others who value and support the church.

Whether you are a long-time member or someone who only recently started coming to UUCH, your support is the key to all the great things we as a church can accomplish. The pledge form you'll fill out at the Stewardship Celebration, along with the pledge forms from everyone else, will be the basis for creating the annual operating budget for the 2019-20 church year that starts in July.

SIGN UP this Sunday in the church Fellowship Hall. Several of the meetings are designated as "CF" (child-friendly), so your whole family can attend. Any special diets will be accommodated so that everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing each of you at a Stewardship Celebration!

Huntsville Assistance Program
209 fabulous food items, 4 huge multi-packs, hundreds of toiletry items, and 4 packs of adult diapers were delivered to the Huntsville Assistance Program. Thanks to all who donated!

New Futures needs additional items. Please see the poster in Fellowship Hall for more information.

The Social Justice Committee  has a goal to collect at least 100 items each month for the food pantry.

Please put your nonperishable food items or personal care products donations in the basket in the church foyer for the Huntsville Assistance Program.

They run low on cereal, canned fruit, mac and cheese, peanut butter, instant mashed potatoes, Hamburger Helper-type meals, and canned veggies -- but not green beans or corn.

They are always grateful for our
donations. Thank you for your continued generosity!

"Stories for the Journey: The Presence of Black Women in Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism

Rev. Dr. Qiyamah A. Rahman,
with service led by Rev. Ed Brock

We strive for inclusivity and equality whenever we gather as people of faith. In this service, we will reflect upon those Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist women of African descent who have made contributions to our faith tradition, and lift up their stories. Many of you will be familiar with some of them, while others will be hearing some of their names for the first time.

The Rev. Dr. Qiyamah A. Rahman is a Unitarian Universalist minister who currently resides in Atlanta. She has recently relocated from St. Croix, VI, where she served as the minister at the UU Fellowship of St. Croix for six years. She is presently compiling an anthology on Black UU Women Clergy for Skinner House Press. She is a recipient of the Minns Lecture Series and will be presenting a series of lectures in the fall of 2020 on the presence of Black UU Women.

Her interests include writing, research, social justice, sustainable living, elder-hood, and gardening. She earned a Bachelor's of Education (University of Michigan); Master's of Social Work (University of Michigan); Master's of Divinity (Meadville Lombard Theological School); and Doctorate of Arts in Humanities (Clark Atlanta University) in Africana Women's Studies.  She has three children and two grandchildren.

Children and youth will continue sessions on " INreach/OUTreach," exploring how to create a wonderful welcome at church and extend it  beyond our walls.

Nursery care for ages 0-3 will be offered as usual.

For more information, contact Erin Reid, Director of Religious Education, or Steve Rittenberg, CYRE Chair.

CYRE registration is open! All families, new and returning, should register each year.  Click here to register!

North AL Social Justice Rally

YOU'RE INVITED: RALLY TO END THE GROCERY TAX

Join us Sunday, March 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for a social justice rally. This rally is co-sponsored by Faith in Action Alabama (FIAA), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and Indivisible 5th District North Alabama. The purpose of the rally is to generate excitement and support for the following initiatives: 1) ending the grocery tax, 2) providing public funding for trade schools, and 3) the Huntsville mayor's commitment to include implicit bias training for Huntsville police officers. Mayor Battle and other elected leaders will be in attendance.

The rally will be held at the Fellowship Presbyterian Church at 3406 Meridian Street N. in Huntsville.

There will be a potluck dinner following the rally, so please bring a dish to share as you are able.  We hope to see you there!

We Can All Be "Greeters"

If you've had the opportunity to be a greeter on Sunday mornings, you know how many people, regulars and visitors, come through our doors. While it is true that we have amazing, wonderful greeters, it's not always possible for them to interact with visitors after they have passed from the foyer into the sanctuary, which is why we all need to be "greeters."

As many of you know, it is not always easy to visit a new church; it takes a certain amount of courage. You're not sure how you'll be received and whether people will talk to you. Often coffee hour can be the most daunting of activities.

So, here's a suggestion: If you see a new face during the service or after, introduce yourself as soon as you can, introduce them to other members if possible, and invite them into the Fellowship Hall. If you see someone standing alone after a service, say hello and invite them to enjoy some of our wonderful coffee. Reaching out to visitors and making them feel welcome can make a big difference in whether or not they decide to come back.

Care List

This Sunday, March 24, 2019,  at our Circle of Candles:

Miranda Durbin lit a candle of sorrow: My paternal grandmother has Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home for a long time. She recently fell and broke her hip. Her health has been on a decline ever since. They are saying it may only be a few more days before she passes. She no longer recognizes anyone. Please send love and light for my family.

The Creekmore Family lit a candle: Ashley had neck surgery on Monday, having two discs replaced and a fusion done. Please keep her and the family in your thoughts.

Deborah Delacey lit a candle of hope: I want to send my love to my oldest son, Vincent, in the hope that he feels a sense of light that lifts his spirits, even for a moment, during his seemingly endless struggle for wellness.

Jo Broussard lit a candle of joy: Please remember Laurie Keller, UUCH member who passed away last year but gave us all the legacy of her dedication to improving the mental health in the community. She was active in the National Association of Mental Health, writing articles and leading workshops. We honor her.

Susan Coddington lit a candle of joy: Thank you for all the expressions of sympathy and concern that I received after the death of my mom. I appreciate all the love and support that you have given. And a big thank you to the Care Committee. Your gift of food helped to ease our pain. Thank you!

Holly Hinkle and Dylan Esterling lit a candle of sorrow: Their mom/grandmother passed last Thursday, and they are asking for prayers for her husband, Johnny, and family.
