A Note from Dean Weich
The last few weeks of the spring semester at UB Law are always chock full of activity and events. First-year students are putting the final touches on their Introduction to Advocacy memos, while graduating students get ready for the bar exam (for the first time in Maryland, they’ll tackle the Uniform Bar Exam). As the academic year comes to a close we celebrate student, faculty and staff achievements at the annual awards ceremony.

Spring is also the season for two annual conferences: The Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center on Families, Children and the Courts hosted its Urban Child Symposium, focused this year on homelessness, with distinguished keynote speaker Peter Edelman. And the Center on Applied Feminism examined the legal implications of the #MeToo movement, bringing scholars from around the nation and keynote speaker Debra Katz to our campus for lively discussions on this very timely topic.

Looking to the future, we are thrilled to welcome a new dean of students, director of externships, director of bar success and other key members of our team. These accomplished professionals will bring new energy and enthusiasm, and a diversity of perspective that is always welcome.

The year will wrap up with the commencement ceremony on May 13 featuring U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. And don’t miss the Alumni Association awards dinner on May 16.

Faculty Accomplishments
Prof. Kim Wehle , right, has been named a contributor for BBC World News and BBC World News America on PBS, as well as legal expert, analyst and commentator at CBS News. Her book, How to Read the Constitution and Why , is due out this June from HarperCollins.

Prof. Wehle has a contract with HarperCollins for a second book, What You Need to Know About Your Right to Vote – And Why , due out in June 2020.

Prof. Daniel L. Hatcher has joined the Project on Access to Justice, Family Law Subcommittee of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The panel is assessing access-to-justice challenges and making recommendations for closing the justice gap around the country.
Prof. Nienke Grossman , co-director of the Center for International and Comparative Law at UB , was elected co-chair of the Women in International Law Interest Group (WILIG) of the American Society of International Law for a three-year term.
Prof. Mortimer Sellers , co-director of the Center for International and Comparative Law at UB School of Law, has been named to the international advisory board of Glossae: European Journal of Legal History.
Faculty Scholarship
Prof. Margaret E. Johnson , director of the Bronfein Family Law Clinic and co-director of the Center on Applied Feminism , wrote the article, Feminist Judgments & #MeToo , in 94 Notre Dame L. Rev. Online 51 (2018). ... Prof. Charles Tiefer wrote the article, President Trump's Space Force is a Recipe for Wasteful Spending , in the University of Pennsylvania's The Reg. Rev., Oct. 23, 2018.

Prof. Dionne Koller , associate dean for academic affairs and director of UB School of Law's Center for Sport and the Law , wrote the article, A Twenty-First Century Olympic and Amateur Sports Act , in 20 Vand. J. Ent. & Tech. 1027 (2018).
Prof. Daniel L. Hatcher , above, wrote a chapter, "States Diverting Finds from the Poor," that will be included in the book, Holes in the Safety Net , Ezra Rosser, ed., forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. ... Prof. Hugh McClean , director of the Bob Parsons Veterans Advocacy Clinic , wrote the article, The Diversity Rationale for Affirmative Action in Military Contracting ,in 66 Cath. U. L. Rev. 745 (2017).


Prof. John B. Snyder III , director of the UB School of Law's Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic , co-authored a book chapter on professional responsibility in tax practice for the 7th edition of Effectively Representing Your Client Before the IRS.

P rof. Fred Brown , director of the Graduate Tax Program , wrote the article, Proposing a Single, Simpler Test for Cash Equivalency , for 71 Tax Law. (2018).
New Colleagues
Paul Manrique , right, is joining the UB School of Law staff in May as Dean of Students. Mr. Manrique was previously senior associate director in leadership development at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Prior to that position, he was program director for new student engagement at University of Notre Dame.

Mr. Manrique earned his B.S. at Michigan State University and his J.D. from University of Wisconsin Law School, where he was student government vice president, a member of the Moot Court Team, and on the executive board of the Latino Law Students Association. He also has worked in private practice.

Rebecca Stahl joined UB Law on April 1 as deputy director of the Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts . Her previous position was staff attorney at the Children's Law Center in Los Angeles. She has also served as staff attorney in the Pima County (Arizona) Office of Children's Counsel.

Ms. Stahl graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and earned a Master of Law degree as a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand.

Neha Lall joins the UB Law faculty in May as Director of Externships. She has been a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School and a supervising attorney in the housing practice group at Chicago's Legal Assistance Foundation. She was also staff attorney at the Life Span Center for Legal Services & Advocacy in Chicago.

Ms. Lall earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was on the Law Review.

We are excited to welcome these talented new colleagues to UB.
News from the Clinics
Venable Prof. Michele E. Gilman will be on sabbatical for the 2019-20 academic year. She will be a faculty fellow at Data & Society , a research institute focused on the social and cultural issues arising from data-centric technological development.

Prof. Gilman will work on building a network of civil legal-services providers to identify data privacy harms suffered by low-income clients and to seek potential legal remedies.
Two clinical teaching fellows are starting jobs at other law schools after completing their fellowships at UB School of Law. Zina Makar, left, will be a clinical teaching fellow in the Civil Rights Clinic at Georgetown Law.

Komal Vaidya is going to Villanova University's Charles Widger School of Law, where she will be an assistant professor of law and director of the Clinic for Law and Entrepreneurship. We wish them all the best!
Prof. Margaret E. Johnson, director of the Bronfein Family Law Clinic and co-director of the Center on Applied Feminism , will assume a new role in June.

Prof. Johnson will become Associate Dean for Experiential Education, a role that will include being director of the Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic .
Prof. Robert Rubinson , co-director of the Mediation Clinic for Families , received the Saul Ewing Award for Outstanding Teaching in Transactional Law at UB Law's Apr. 14 awards ceremony. Other clinic faculty and staff honored were Venable Prof. Michele E. Gilman , Faculty Scholarship Award for Traditional Research; Prof. Margaret E. Johnson , Law Faculty Service Award, and staff administrative assistant Laura Garcia , Rose McMunn Distinguished Service Staff Award.
UB School of Law in the News
Prof. Cassandra Jones Havard , left, published an op-ed on changes to regulation of payday lending in the April 5 issue of Detroit Free Press .

Jessica Emerson , director of UB School of Law's Human Trafficking Prevention Project , was one of several authors of a Polaris report grading the states on how well they provide criminal relief to survivors of human trafficking. The report was covered in The Baltimore Sun , which then editorialized in support of proposed Maryland legislation that would have helped trafficking victims clear their criminal records. Read more

Venable Prof. Michele E. Gilman , director of the Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic at UB School of Law, has written and spoken extensively about how the poor are disadvantaged when it comes to data privacy. She was quoted in a Mar. 18 Fast Company article and a Mar. 14 article in Vice . Read more
Student News
Elizabeth Paige , Class of 2020, has won a prestigious  Newman Civic Fellow Award for her service to the UB community. She helped establish the campus food pantry and has advocated for diversity and inclusion on a variety of issues. Read more

Adanna Smith , right, Class of 2019, won Best Oral Advocate at the National Black Law Students Association's Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition, held in March. Smith outscored competitors from several schools nationwide including George Washington University and Columbia University to secure the title of National Best Oral Advocate.

Christian Coward , Class of 2021, has received the 2019 Silverman|Thompson|
Slutkin|White Fellowship. He will receive a stipend for work at the STSW law firm this summer and scholarship funds from the firm for the next two academic years.  

Jennifer Mahan , Class of 2019, received a one-year national fellowship through If/When/How to work at SPARK Reproductive Justice Now in Atlanta after graduation. Read more
Adrianne Blake , Class of 2019, has won the 2018 Making the Right Moves Volunteer Service Award from the   Military Spouse J.D. Network , an organization that supports lawyers who have spouses in the military.

Ms. Blake is managing editor of the  University of Baltimore Law Review and president of the Military and Government Law Association.

Darryl Tarver , J.D. '14, an associate at DLA Piper, has been named chairman of the Maryland Legal Aid's new Equal Justice Associates, whose mission is to provide equal access to representation for low-income Maryland residents. ... Mr. Tarver and Lauren E. Lake , J.D. '16, an associate at Gordon Feinblatt, have been named Generation J.D. 2019 honorees by The Daily Record .

David F. Katz , J.D. '99, has been named a partner in the Atlanta office of Adams and Reese. His hiring allows the firm to expand its capabilities and the depth of its privacy, cybersecurity and data management practice.

Veteran real estate attorney  Stuart Resnick,  J.D. '81, has joined Kramon & Graham as Of Counsel in the firm's Real Estate and Transactions practice groups.
