A Note from Dean Weich
Beyond its devastating and heartbreaking effects on human health, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended normal operations at institutions across the globe. The University of Baltimore School of Law is no exception. In mid-March, almost overnight, we became an online law school.

I am enormously proud of our faculty and staff for their hard work in carrying out the law school’s mission through these difficult days. And I greatly admire our students for their patience, flexibility and focus as they continued their studies. UB students have always been known for their grit, resilience and problem-solving skills. Never have those skills been so tested – or so evident – as during this semester.

Sadly, the public health emergency has deprived us of the opportunity to celebrate in person such milestones as the 30 th anniversary of UB Law’s nationally renowned clinical program and such accomplishments as new books by Professors Rob Rubinson, Gilda Daniels. Kim Wehle and others. Were we still allowed to meet in person, we would have given Professor Mike Meyerson a big round of applause for receiving the President’s Faculty Award this year. So now you have more reason than ever to take a look at the news below. Let’s give all of our faculty, staff and students a virtual round of applause for all they do to keep UB Law strong!  -- Ronald Weich

Faculty News
Prof. Michael Meyerson was recognized with the University of Baltimore President's Faculty Award for 2020, for outstanding teaching, scholarship and service to the university. Read more ... UB Law's Community Development Clinic , led by Prof. Jaime Alison Lee , at right, received an honorable mention for the Clinical Law Education Association's Award for Excellence in a Public Interest Project. The honor was given for the clinic's five years of work on the Water Justice Project for Baltimore City. Read more .

Prof. Daniel L. Hatcher appeared in the Netflix documentary The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez , as an expert on how the "poverty industry" and privatization impact delivery of care in social services agencies. Read more ... Prof. Jane Murphy was named an Influential Marylander by The Daily Record newspaper. Murphy is one of three retiring faculty members to whom we said goodbye this month. The other two are Elizabeth Samuels and Garrett Epps . All will remain associated with UB Law on emeritus status. We thank them for their many years of wonderful teaching and service to our community.

UB Law has launched UB Law in Focus Discussion Series , a series of webinars featuring faculty and alumni addressing topics of current interest through a legal lens.

The first webinar is on Wednesday, June 3 from 5 to 6 p.m., with UB constitutional law professors Michael Meyerson , Garrett Epps, at left, and Kim Wehle examining Constitutional Issues in a Pandemic: The Obligations and Limits of Government.

Clinical Program Celebrates 30 Years
The seeds of UB's Clinical Law Program were sown in the late 1980s, when top scholars and practitioners joined the faculty to launch the first few clinics. Thirty years later, our program is ranked among the top 14 clinical law programs in the nation.

Over the past three decades, UB Law has grown the program from three clinics to 12, which serve more than 450 clients per year. Because the clinics operate as one law firm within the law school, our students are licensed to practice in the clinics as student-attorneys working with real clients.

Each clinic is taught by law school faculty, and because of our low student-faculty ratio, students receive intensive, individual faculty instruction at all stages of their lawyering – giving them the confidence and skills needed to become leaders in the legal community post-graduation. And while students in the clinical law program receive unmatched, real-life practical experience, they also generate significant results that benefit the Baltimore region and Maryland. Maya Zegarra , J.D. '15, at right, used her experience in the Immigrant Rights Clinic to become an attorney with HIAS.

Joyette Holmes, J.D. '01, at left, has been named special prosecutor investigating the February slaying of Ahmaud Arbery in Brunswick, Ga. Holmes is district attorney in Cobb County, Ga., an Atlanta suburb. Baltimore Law , UB Law’s alumni magazine,  profiled Holmes  in its 2019 issue. Read more .
