A Note from Dean Weich
Snow is in the forecast, which means the fall semester at the University of Baltimore School of Law is coming to a close. It has been a productive time at our law school. 

Enrollment in the J.D. program is strong and steady, our bar pass rate is on the rise, and UB students continue to find great jobs in an improved legal marketplace. More than one-fourth of the graduating class will clerk in the Maryland judiciary, while others will begin their legal careers at law firms, corporations and in government agencies. The UB alumni network makes sure that the next generation of graduates finds a foothold on the ladder to successful careers! 

The law school was the venue for many exciting events this fall.  Monica Pinto ,  president of the Administrative Tribunals of the World Bank and of the Inter-American Development Bank, was our speaker for the annual Stead Lecture on International and Comparative Law . The UB Law Review hosted a provocative symposium on the legacy of slavery in modern-day criminal justice policies. And it was a proud day when a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit convened in the Byron L. Warnken Moot Courtroom to hear oral arguments in live cases. 

Another activity that kept us busy in recent months is the search for new faculty members. Many impressive candidates are competing for the opportunity to teach UB students all about Property, Civil Procedure and other core subjects. A dedicated faculty has always been a hallmark of our law school, so it is exciting to search for the next Byron Warnken or the next Jane Murphy. The future is bright at UB, and many young scholars want to join this remarkable institution.

Prof. Colin Starger,  director of the Legal Data and Design Clinic and associate director for legal technologies at the Center for the Law of Intellectual Property and Technology , wrote a chapter, "A Separate, Abridged Edition of the First Amendment," in Justice Scalia: Rhetoric and the Rule of Law,  Slocum and Mootz, eds., University of Chicago (2019).

Prof. Gregory Dolin is taking a sabbatical and moving to the Pacific island nation of Palau to begin service in January as  an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. ... Prof. Gilda Daniels ,  at right, presented "Fourth Annual State of Voting Rights" to the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice, on Nov. 8, in Washington, D.C. Her forthcoming book, Uncounted: The Crisis of Voter Suppression in America , will be published in January by NYU Press.

Prof. Donald H. Stone , director of the Mental Health Law Clinic , presented "Dangerous Minds: Myths and Realities Behind the Violent Behavior of the Mentally Ill," at the International Congress on Law & Mental Health, on July 22, in Rome. ... Prof. Barbara A. Babb , director of the Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts , presented "Five Years of Family Justice Courts" at the International Advisory Council Meeting, on Oct. 1, in Singapore, and "Creating a Caring Unified Family Court," at the Family Justice Practice Forum, on Oct. 2, also in Singapore. ... Prof. Kim Wehle , whose book How to Read the Constitution -- and Why was published in June , will be a visiting fellow in the Program on Law and Government at American University for the spring semester 2020. Her book What You Need to Know About Voting -- and Why is due out in June 2020.

Prof. John Bessler presented "The Baron and the Marquis: Liberty, Tyranny, and the Enlightenment Maxim that Can Remake American Criminal Justice," at Harvard Law School, on Oct. 4. ... Francis M. Womack III, J.D. '84 , at left, of North Brunswick, NJ, was reelected to his fifth term as mayor of that township on Nov. 5. He campaigned on tax relief, which he called his number one priority. ... Sarah Witri, J.D. '12 , was named pro bono program manager with Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service in September. Prior to joining MVLS, she was a staff attorney with Maryland Legal Aid.
