Budget Workshops Begin Sept. 19
The Board of Supervisors 2023 Budget meeting dates and times are posted online on the Township Calendar.
All meetings are open to the public, broadcast live on Comcast 22 and Verizon 21 and posted on the Township website the next day. The Preliminary Budget will be available for review on the Township website once approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Talk about Fire Safety with the Family
Please take time this Fall to discuss with your family what everyone needs to know about home fire safety.
Residential fires burn faster and hotter than ever, due to open home layouts and synthetic materials, making this discussion ever more important. Fire Marshal John Kernan offers these reminders:
- Test your smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries annually and install new smoke alarms every ten years.
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. They should also be outside sleeping areas on every level of the home.
- Install smoke alarms in your garage, laundry room, attic and utility room.
- Position alarms on the ceiling since smoke follows the path of least resistance.
- Consider installing wireless interconnected smoke alarms in homes that do not have hard-wired systems.

Schedule a Free Child Car Seat Check-up
Is your child in the right car seat? Is the seat installed properly? Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week is Sept. 18-24, 2022, and the Upper Makefield Police Department reminds you of the importance of the correct car seat and proper installation because car seats save lives.
Sergeant Mary Kate Huff is certified through Safe Kids Worldwide to educate parents, grandparents and caregivers on the proper use of car seats, booster seats and seatbelts. You May be Eligible for a Reduction in Flood Insurance Rates
Upper Makefield has a history of flooding along the Delaware River and the streams and tributaries that flow through the Township.
In records dating back to 1903, five of the top ten historic flood crests have occurred since 2004.
To help residents obtain discounted flood insurance premiums, the Township applied for and was accepted into the Community Rating System (CRS) Program in 2017. CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum requirements. The Township earned a Rating of 9 in 2017, qualifying residents for a 5% discount on their National Flood Insurance Program Policy (NFIP) premium.
This year, the Township participated in additional CRS activities which increased our level to a Rate 8. This qualifies homes and businesses mapped within the Special Flood Hazard Areas (A and AE Flood Zones), for a 10% discount beginning October 1, 2022. Homes and businesses not in a Special Flood Hazard Area will continue to receive the 5% discount.

Upper Makefield Achieves Gold Status in Sustainable PA Program
Running a Township well is a coordinated effort among elected officials, their professional staff and the broader community of residents and governments. Upper Makefield is proud to announce that the Township has achieved Gold Status from the comprehensive assessment program, Sustainable PA.
The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification is designed for municipalities that are working to save money and conserve resources while serving their communities. The rigorous program tracks 131 policies and practices that define a sustainable community.
The Gold certification acknowledges Upper Makefield's progress in areas of community design and land use, energy efficiency, health and wellness, intergovernmental cooperation, recycling and waste reduction, fiscal controls and interagency management and operations.

You Can Help Stomp Out Spotted Lanternfly
Mature Spotted Lanternflies are laying eggs this Fall, in egg masses of 30-50 each. The cold doesn't kill them, but you can!
The insect feeds on certain trees, vines and plants, causing significant damage and loss. Though they don't hurt humans, they can can cause millions of dollars in economic damage to trees and agricultural crops.
You can help by scraping and squishing every egg mass you find.

Tap our Tree Grant Program For Fall Plantings
Upper Makefield Township's Tree Grant program, which defrays costs for planting Pennsylvania native trees, enhances the Township's stormwater management program while building a leafy canopy on your property. Please consider adding trees to your property this Fall.
The Tree Grant program reimburses residents for tree purchase, planting and deer protection for up to 12 trees or $975 total. Grant money comes from contributions from local developers, not resident tax dollars.
