Greetings. This coming Saturday would have been my mom’s 87^th birthday. I have a reminder on my phone that reminds me to send her a card. But this year I don’t need to. It has been over six months since she passed away and I still miss her and think of her often. Pastor Debbie’s mom’s birthday was this past Sunday. Since my mom has not lived close to us for 30 years and her mom was in Florida for her last two years, it is like they are still there but we just can’t call them. I miss that so much. When I called my mom she would fill me in on all the family there in Bristol and I would listen. Occasionally she would ask, “are you still there,” or say “say something” which would then give me a chance to talk a little about my family up here. I will miss the (at least) two trips to Tennessee per year to visit her. I call my sister often to check in on her because she feels the loss so much more since Mom lived with her. The passing of time brings a lot of changes. I am almost now part of the oldest generation in my family. Over the years I have officiated at 12 of that generation’s funeral services, six on my side (mostly unchurched) and six on Debbie’s side (the ones that didn’t mind a non-Babtist doing their service). My mom’s older sister is still living and my dad’s younger brother is still with us. All of Debbie’s father’s siblings are all gone with a few of their spouses still living. Life goes on and we assume the patriarch and matriarch roles. I feel the responsibility of that knowing that just like the previous generation left a legacy, both the good and the flaws, we will leave a legacy also. I strive for and hope that my children’s generation will look back on me with fondness when my time is over. Life goes on and so does the living. I want my life to matter and I believe that it will. May we all live with our descendants in mind.

We will have a brief time of teaching and discussion on a Holy Spirit-led topic at the beginning of each night and spend the rest of the time pressing into the presence of God.
