Two federal initiatives have been launched, aimed at making home testing widely available. Home testing will help you protect friends, neighbors, and family from COVID because they will help you know if you have been infected and need to isolate to avoid spreading the infection. The CDC recommends testing any time symptoms show up, including sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing. It’s especially important to be vigilant if you will be in a gathering where people may be unvaccinated, elderly, or have health challenges that weaken their immunity.

• Go to COVIDtests.gov and order the kit of four tests for your household. The tests will come in the mail, and there’s no charge for the tests or shipping. The federal government has purchased 1 billion of the rapid antigen tests for this program. Your kits should ship later this month. (Note: Washington state has announced a similar program will be coming soon, in addition to the federal initiative.)

• Check with your health insurance provider for details on how to get reimbursed for purchases of over-the-counter COVID diagnostic tests. A federal order requires insurance companies and health plans to cover the cost of eight tests per month. Some providers will supply the tests with no upfront cost, and in other cases, you may need to file with your insurance for reimbursement up to $12 per test. Tests must have been purchased after January 15th. Home test supplies at pharmacies continue to be erratic and require some searching.

Free Test Kits at COVIDtests.gov: Click on the blue “Order Free At-Home Tests” button. It takes less than one minute to fill out the order form. Federal officials say that should get you four tests delivered to your mailbox within about two weeks.

Vashon’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) needs your help to flatten the curve of the current severe spike in Omicron-variant cases of COVID. If you get a positive test, call the MRC helpline at (844) 469-4554. You’ll be doing yourself and the community a favor.



“People assume that we automatically are informed about positive tests, but that’s not true,” said Dr. Jim Bristow, MRC’s primary lead on COVID testing since the beginning of the pandemic. “The two new free home test kit programs will hopefully get thousands of tests to Vashonites, which is great. However, positive results from home testing will stay in the home unless the patient gets in touch with us so we can help with advice and track the path of the infection in the community. Please call our helpline if you have a positive test result.”

Dr. Bristow points out that the aggressive testing program at Vashon schools has been very helpful. However, the recent volume of cases has been overwhelming, and the school district has not been able to keep up with sharing information with MRC on positive tests. That’s a particular problem because of the school/community COVID connection, so it’s vital that those who test positive at school or home contact the MRC helpline at (844) 469-4554. Analysis shows that the cumulative COVID rate in the schools since the pandemic began is more than double the rate in the general Vashon population — with 10.5% of the Vashon school district students and staff infected to date compared to only 4.1% infected in the non-school population. “The district tracks infections in classrooms, but COVID doesn’t know boundaries and doesn’t just stay on the school grounds. Over and over we see kids bringing COVID home and infecting siblings who then miss school, or they infect parents who miss work and family income. This has hit our island’s low-income families very hard.”

Vashon Pharmacy, in collaboration with Vashon Island School District (VISD) and VashonBePrepared, is offering an additional COVID vaccination clinic on the VISD campus on Thursday, January 27, 2022, 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM. This clinic will be held at Vashon High School but is open to VISD and non-VISD middle and high school students 12 and older. The clinic will provide boosters and first and second doses. The vaccines are free to all. Per state law, students who are younger than 18 require permission from their parent or guardian to be vaccinated. To make an appointment, go to tinyurl.com/vashonvhs3 The registration deadline is 7 PM on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

On top of the current very serious Omicron spike of COVID, Vashon Natural Medicine and Sea Mar clinics have been dealing with a major increase in the number of seasonal respiratory ailments, so it’s a good idea to get your flu shot if you haven’t already done so. 

Vashon Natural Medicine started seeing double the typical number of winter colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia around the first of the month. Even though many of the respiratory illness patients are testing negative, they are being treated as if they have COVID. "We are recommending that patients isolate or quarantine during symptoms, regardless," clinic owner Dr. Kelly Wright said.

At Sea Mar, Clinic Administrator Kerry Barnes also reports an uptick in patients with respiratory ailments and sore throats who are testing negative for both COVID and strep throat. As a safety measure, Sea Mar asks patients with symptoms to begin their treatment by signing up for telehealth appointments. “We are trying to protect our patients and staff, so we are encouraging patients to have a phone visit with a provider, and they will determine if we need to test for flu, COVID, or strep,” Barnes said.

Barnes acknowledged that there has been a significant increase in positive COVID tests, stressing that it's important to stay home when ill or waiting for test results. That may not be easy to do for some households, but she said it's important to decrease community spread and to reduce stress on health care workers. “Do a home test. If you are not sure, get a PCR test done. Wear a mask. Practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when you are sick,” she said.

A testing backlog has resulted in delayed results, Barnes noted, and some people aren't waiting for test results before going out in public, which contributes to the spread of illness. The clinic is working with its lab vendor to get results back as soon as possible and is trying to address the shortage of testing supplies as well, she added.

The current challenges to personnel throughout the healthcare system are real, Barnes said, affecting referrals, scheduling, and providers. The Omicron spike has caused staff shortages because clinic workers can be out for up to 14 days, depending on their COVID symptoms. “We need the community to help each other out to decrease the spread," she said.

The CDC recently announced that it would be good to move up to 95% mask protection if you can, especially if you’ll be in risky situations or around someone who may be at risk due to their health or because they aren’t vaccinated. The N95 mask standard was named because it filters out 95% of all airborne particles when used correctly. Facing the highly contagious Omicron variant, the CDC now cautions that cloth masks offer the least protection against COVID, especially compared to the highest level of protection provided by N95 masks. The capital letters “NIOSH” should be printed right on the mask. The federal government has announced a new program to get masks to the public and will be distributing 400 million free N95 masks. The distribution plan includes health centers and pharmacies, but it is not yet clear how the masks might be made available on Vashon.

For King County, the PHSKC dashboard for the last 30 days says unvaccinated people are:

• 2.5 times more likely to get COVID.
• 11 times more likely to be hospitalized for COVID.
• 17 times more likely to die of COVID.

Pruebas Rápidas Gratis en: COVIDtests.gov: Presionen el botón azul para empezar la orden. Les tomara menos de un minuto llenar de la orden. Los oficiales federales dicen que recibirán sus 4 pruebas por correo en aproximadamente dos semanas.  

Los que trabajamos como voluntarios en el MRC necesitamos su ayuda para aplanar el actual pico de casos de la variante Ómicron del COVID. ‘El Dr. Jim Bristow nos dice que muchas personas piensan que en cuanto hay un resultado positivo, de alguien en la isla que se hizo la prueba fuera del MRC, que se nos informa de inmediato para empezar a hacer el rastreo de contactos que limita la diseminación del virus, pero este no es el caso’. El Dr. Bristow indica que el muy agresivo programa de pruebas que las escuelas de Vashon han estado haciendo, ha sido muy útil. Sin embargo, el número reciente de casos ha sido abrumador y el distrito escolar no ha tenido la capacidad de compartir la información de los casos (+) con nosotros en el MRC. Este es un problema muy serio por la conexión que hay entre las escuelas y la comunidad, haciendo muy importante, que aquellos que tengan una prueba positiva se pongan en contacto con nosotros, marcando la línea de ayuda del MRC: 844 496 4554.

 El análisis que se ha hecho desde que empezó la pandemia, indica que la tasa acumulada de COVID en las escuelas es de más del doble de los que se ha observado en la población general de Vashon – con 10.5% de estudiantes y empleados infectados en el distrito escolar de Vashon, comparado con 4.1% de la población que no va a la escuela.  ‘El distrito hace el seguimiento de la infección en el salón de clases, pero el COVID no conoce limites y no solo se queda en los terrenos de las escuelas. Una y otra vez vemos chicos que se traen la infeccion del COVID a la casa, donde infectan a los hermanos, que después no pueden ir a la escuela o a los padres que no pueden trabajar y no reciben ingresos para el mantenimiento de la casa. Como muchos de ustedes saben, esto ha sido muy duro para muchas familias modestas de bajos recursos en la isla’.



Por otro lado, es también muy importante mencionar que el número de casos de enfermedades respiratorias que se han visto en la isla es muy grande incluyendo, gripe, catarro, influenza y en casos más serios bronquitis y pulmonías. Recuerden que no se puede diferenciar uno de otro así que el primer paso es descartar COVID, haciéndose la prueba, segundo, protegiéndose contra la influenza, vacunándose y siempre usando un buen cubreboca, lo que siempre protege contra varios cuadros respiratorios. Si tienen algún cuadro respiratorio, por favor no lo dejen pasar a que se haga mas serio. Atiéndanse lo más pronto posible, quédense en casa mientras reciben los resultados de la prueba y de ser posible, aíslense del resto de los familiares, para no contagiarlos.

Vacunación para estudiantes de 12 años para arriba, el jueves 1/27

La Farmacia de Vashon en colaboración con El Distrito Escolar de Vashon (VISD) y VashonBePrepared, está ofreciendo una nueva clínica de vacunación de COVID en el campus del VISD, el jueves 27 de enero del 2022 de las 7:30 a las 8:30.

Aunque la clínica será en la escuela preparatoria de Vashon, está abierta para todos los estudiantes en la isla de 12 años para arriba. Se aplicarán primeras y segundas dosis, así como vacunas de refuerzo. Las vacunas son gratis para todos. Por ley estatal, todos los estudiantes menores de 18 años requieren permiso de sus padres para que se les vacune. La fecha límite para registrase es el martes 25 de enero del 2022 a las 7 PM.

Para quien necesite registrarse en español, lo pueden hacer, usando la forma de papel que pueden encontrar en la Farmacia de Vashon y las oficinas de la escuela secundaria de McMurray y la preparatoria, donde hay que regresarlas para fecha límite. Recuerden que la farmacia cierra a las 7 PM durante la semana.

El CDC anunció hace poco que sería útil si la mayoría de la gente puede usar un cubreboca que de una protección del 95%, sobre todo cuando se está en situaciones riesgosas o alrededor de gente que puede estar a alto riesgo e infección, porque no están vacunadas. El cubreboca N95 se le ha dado este nombre por su capacidad para filtrar las partículas en el aire de una manera muy efectiva. El CDC nos avisa que para enfrentar lo contagioso que ha resultado la variante de ómicron, los cubrebocas de tela no son los más eficientes porque ofrecen mucho menos protección, en comparación con el N95. Lo ideal es que las letras mayúsculas de ‘NIOSH’ estén marcadas en el cubreboca. El gobierno federal anunció que van a distribuir mas de 400 millones de cubrebocas N95 gratis. El plan de distribución incluye centros de salud y farmacias, pero todavía no sabemos como se distribuirán en Vashon. Así que mientras tanto, búsquenme, Lydia Aguilar en el 206 383 7644 y yo les doy los que necesiten.
