 Full STEAM Ahead

We are proud to announce that the Maize Education Foundation (MEF) has granted us the Full STEAM Ahead grant.  This donation from MEF will allow for us to start the beginning process of the STEAM learning program at VES.

The STEAM learning program will consist of an outdoor learning garden, a STEAM classroom that will contain mini labs.  These labs will feature an art lab, STEM lab, and movement lab.  In addition, we plan to begin a VES news broadcast in the near future and will have a green screen room to do so.

We still have our Donors Choose project called Full STEAM Ahead up for additional funding. This project will help to add additional STEAM items to our classroom and further enrich our student learning opportunities.

A huge thank you to our current donors: Jen Vogts, Kim Dickerson-Oard, Randy and Eileen Dickerson, Troy & Merinda Heard, and Vermillion PTO.

If you are interested in funding, please visit our Donors Choose link:  Donors Choose STEAM Project or email or speak with Mr. Dome mdome@usd266.com or Mrs. Nash  jnash@usd266.com.

 Nurse Kelli's Column
Dear Boys and Girls,

Bears don't wear mittens or gloves because we have furry paws. Kids don't have fur so when it is cold outside, they need to wear winter clothes like coats, hats and mittens. That's how people keep warm.

One kid I know named Harrison never had his mittens with him, he would either lose them or forget them on the bus. Usually, he didn't even mind, but once when it got very cold, his fingers got numb and he was crying. He said that his fingers hurt a lot, and it was hard to move them. The teacher made him go right to the school nurse, and she warmed him up and loaned him some gloves. She told Harrison that he had to be responsible about his gloves or he would get frostbite. Frostbite is when a part of a person's body begins to freeze. It is very painful, even after the person gets warm again.

Gloves and mittens keep kids from getting frostbite on our fingers. Hats and hoods keep kids from getting frostbite on their ears. Scarves and ski masks help keep kids from getting frost bite on their noses. Boots and socks help keep kids from getting frost bite on their toes. Those parts are all the farthest from the warm middle of you, and they are the ones that need extra covering when it is very cold or windy and cold.

Dress warmly on cold days. Wear your warm clothes out for recess and to play after school. If any part of you starts to feel tingly or numb, go inside!

Does this school ever have indoor recesses when it is very cold and windy outside? That's because people, and bears, need to keep their bodies warm, even when it's cold out!

Love,
Wuzzy
 Music Notes

We've had a great year in music at VES!  Mrs. Zuniga, our students and I have really enjoyed exploring our new music curriculum, 'Quaver'!

I wanted to remind all of you that your child (including 5th graders) can access fun music activities throughout the school year and summer at Quaver Music. Their accounts are already set up and all they need to do is enter their VES student ID as their Quaver name and the password: music1. These activities can be accessed through computers or mobile devices.  If you need more information, please feel free to e-mail me.

I hope your summer will include some music activities in one form or another.  I know Maize Recreation is offering several music camps so you might check out their schedule if you're looking for things to do this summer!

Best of luck to our fabulous 5th grade students! I have loved having them in class these past 5 years!

One more thing:  If you have pictures of any of the music programs this year that you don't mind sharing, I would love to have some.  A digital copy is fine!  Thank you!

 Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House
Each year RMHC Wichita sponsors a state wide Pull Tab Program. We collect the metal tab piece located on the top of a soda can or any other aluminum can with a tab. These pieces are known as pop tabs or pull tabs. (Most soup and cat food can tabs are made from tin so unfortunately, we cannot take them.

This activity not only helps save the earth, but it also raises much-needed awareness about how one individual's contribution can make a substantial difference for a family staying at one of our Ronald McDonald Houses or using our Ronald McDonald Family Room.

Collecting pull tabs is fun and easy!It is also a great way for children, families, schools and companies to get involved!

Drop off pull tabs in your child's classroom.
