State-Law Savvy:
How to Find and Follow State Employment Laws
Employment laws have been created to protect workers from wrongdoing in the workplace. T hese laws have been constructed to protect both the employee and the employer. In the United States, the relationship between employer and employee is known as a "master-servant" situation because the employee is expected to perform specified duties under the auspices of the employer. Labor laws have been created to prevent employers from abusing their power. These laws continue to be created and modified with the changing times.

Zee Mahmood
Zee Mahmood is a 4th year affiliate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, originally from Saint Matthew's University. While at SMU, Zee served in leadership roles such as SAVMA President, SVECCS President, and Class Representative among others. A few of his various certifications include the VBMA Business Certificate, Fear-Free Handling for Veterinary Professionals, and UIUC Clinical Small Animal Dentistry. He has also has worked as a contributing author to Veterinary Practice News and IDEXX Pet Health Network. Zee loves many aspects of vet med, but his ultimate goal is practice ownership. He is particularly interested in financial management and leadership strategies. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, experiencing new cultures via international travel, and also drawing and painting, of which he hopes to someday have his work featured on the cover of JAVMA.
