Welcome to WISEwords

A great thank you to Toni Abramson Matthews for naming our newsletter!

Many of the photos and articles included in this inaugural issue of WISEwords come from two outstanding events that took place this year. On October 24, 2013, nearly 200 people gathered in Tarrytown, NY to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of WISE. WISE alumnus and keynote speaker Andrew Ross Sorkin is interviewed by WISE alumnus David L. Marcus. On April 3, 2014, educators and students from 13 schools exchanged ideas at the 2014 WISE Coordinators Forum. Regent Harry Phillips, III, provided a candid keynote.

Congratulations to all of the students who completed their WISE Projects this year! Kudos to all the dedicated coordinators, mentors, parents and businesses that made these WISE journeys possible. We look forward to hearing from you in the coming year.

WISE Alumna and Educator Kia Darling-Hammond in Support of WISE Program at New Rochelle

Kia Darling-Hammond, COO of Stanford Schools Corporation (CA), is an alumna and student co-founder of the WISE Program at New Rochelle High School. Her WISE Project, "The Effects of Seratonin on Aggressive Behavior," "was something I wouldn't have had the opportunity to investigate as a high school student."

A WISE Success Story: Andrew Ross Sorkin

Andrew Ross Sorkin began writing for The New York Times in 1995 under unusual circumstances. He hadn't yet graduated from high school. The best-selling author and co-anchor of "Squawk Box" on CNBC is interviewed by another WISE alumnus, Pulitzer Prize-Winning journalist, David L. Marcus.

Recharging Batteries at the WISE Forum

We are grateful to New Rochelle High School for being such gracious hosts for the 2014 WISE Coordinators Forum. Educators and students from 13 high schools gathered for a lively exchange of ideas and best practices. A live performance by award-winning singer, musician and actor Michael Mark set the tone, with "Not on the Test." A keynote presentation was followed by an expert panel and breakout roundtables.

"I was able to learn more about how other schools conduct WISE." Rosemarie Gamba, WISE Coordinator/Mentor at Midwood High School

"It is always helpful to talk with other coordinators and students and staff." Constantine Andreadis, WISE Coordinator at Woodlands High School

"In an age where expression is being limited & student creativity dampened, it is even more important to have programs like WISE advertised & discussed within our communities.
