Wrong-Way Driver Arrested for DUII after Near Head-On Collision | |

In an alarming incident on Highway 26, a white Mini Cooper was spotted driving in the wrong direction, prompting multiple 9-1-1 calls. Deputies and Hillsboro Police swiftly responded and apprehended the driver, 29-year-old Matthew Silveira, after he exited the highway. Upon contact, deputies observed signs of intoxication, and a witness revealed a near head-on collision with Silveira's vehicle. Successful Collaboration Between Law Enforcement Agencies Leads to Arrests | |

Earlier this week, deputies in Hillsboro responded to a report of a stolen vehicle report heading toward Beaverton. A Beaverton Police officer spotted the car on the city's west side and located it abandoned near the 13000 block of SW Savanah Lane.
Officers requested K9 Griff and his partner, Deputy Terry, to track down the fleeing suspects. Griff wasted no time and led his handler straight to one of the individuals, whom a Beaverton Police officer swiftly detained. However, two suspects remained at large.
But don't worry—the remarkable Griff didn't give up. He continued tracking their scent, eventually finding them several streets away.
As a result, Hillsboro Police successfully arrested all three occupants, showcasing the outstanding collaboration between law enforcement agencies in Washington County. Our communities are safer when we work together!
Let's all give a round of applause to Griff—a dedicated and talented four-legged deputy! Born in September 2019, Griff is a mix of German Shepard and Belgian Malinois. He completed his certification in April 2021 and has been a true hero serving our community ever since.

Plans for holiday travels? Consider these preventive measures to help keep your home and belongings safe while you are away.

Ask a friend, trusted neighbor, or family member to keep a watchful eye. Consider leaving them a key to stop by and ensure everything is in order. They can immediately alert you and law enforcement if anything is concerning, like a broken window or forced door.

Adjust mail deliveries. Ask someone to collect your mail or place a vacation hold through the United States Postal Service website: www.usps.com. Make sure to do the same for any scheduled package deliveries as well.

Make a plan for trash pickup. Ask a neighbor to pull in your bins. If left on the street, it could signal no one is home.

Program your home with safety tools. A smart plug allows you to control or schedule your lights and devices with an app, or mechanical timers can also work well. Alarm systems, including video doorbells and cameras, can be effective home safety tools.

Limit content shared on social media. Consider waiting until you get home to share the details of your trip.

Eighth Annual Cornelius Community Dinner

On Saturday, November 18, 2023, the City of Cornelius, in partnership with Centro Cultural de Washington County and the Washington County Sheriff's Office, hosted the Eighth Annual Cornelius Community Dinner at Cornelius Elementary School. Hosts and local partners were excited to serve a free turkey holiday meal to community members in attendance.
This event served around 500 meals: turkey, dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, and dessert. Coffee, water, and aguas frescas were also on the menu. The dinner was made possible through the collaboration and generous donations of multiple community partners, businesses, and wonderful volunteers who contributed to this event’s success.
Continuing this warm and inviting annual tradition allows for sharing a meal and conversation with community members, city leaders, police, fire officials, and many more, making the Cornelius Community Dinner an extraordinary and favorite event for many. It’s truly a meaningful event for our community and brings holiday cheer as we enter the season of giving.

WCSO is committed to continuous improvement, accountability, and compliance with national law enforcement standards and has pursued recognition through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 2004.
CALEA standards require accredited agencies to connect community members to a public portal inviting comments on the quality of law enforcement services. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns and provide WCSO with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence..
