Support Your
Library!
|
Did you know that your support of the Waterville
Public Library can change the life of a child? For over one
hundred years, the Library has been helping children build literacy
skills while discovering new worlds. In today's changing global
environment, it is critical that youth have strong literacy skills
of all types. The Library seeks out community partners to develop
collaborative programming to help all youth and their families
develop and strengthen these crucial skills.
Your support of the Waterville Public Library Capital Campaign
will enable the Library to increase access to library resources for
all
community members, including our youngest residents. The Campaign
will also support new programming focusing on early literacy and
homework support which will broaden the Library's ability to help
families and youth.
$400,000
MATCHING CHALLENGE GRANT
The Harold Alfond
Foundation has challenged the Library to raise $150,000 by January
15, 2011. During this time, the Harold Alfond Foundation will
match every $1.00 raised with $2.00, thus tripling each donation.
In addition, the Foundation will award a $100,000 bonus to the
Library if we reach our goal of $150,000 by the January 15th
deadline.
This is a wonderful
opportunity to bring a three-year campaign to a victorious close.
The Library will be able to complete its new addition and
renovation this year and, if successful in qualifying for the
bonus, implement new library programs and services for Library
patrons of all ages.
We are so grateful
for all of the donations from our friends and patrons during the
past several years.
Help is still
needed. If you haven't already made a gift to the Campaign, will
you please consider doing so? Now is an important time to help
your Library! In this challenging economic climate, more people
are using the Library's resources than ever, and your gift will
have an even greater impact. Please consider a gift to the
Library, a gift that will be tripled in value with the Harold
Alfond Foundation support.
To give,
please send a check to the Waterville Public Library Capital
Campaign, P.O. Box 2060, Waterville, Maine, 04903, stop by the
Campaign donation station in the Library, call Sarah Sugden at
207-872-5433 or access the library's secure donation

WATERVILLE
PUBLIC LIBRARY BUSINESS & CAREER
CENTER
The
Waterville Public Library Business & Career Center is a new
initiative made possible by a $40,000 start-up grant from KVCAP, a
$15,000 gift from the Waterville Rotary Club, and contributions to
the current Harold Alfond
Foundation matching grant campaign.
We
are developing a collection of print,
electronic,
and
programming resources to service a full spectrum of career and
business development needs.
The
start up funding for this initiative allowed the Library to create
a laptop laboratory of 13 laptops. In addition, the Library now has
professional quality presentation equipment for presentations and
workshops. Funding from Colby College will provide a renovated
multi-use programming room aptly called The Colby Room.
Funding for the overall Campaign will provide a small conference
room and a renovated lecture hall/program room. In addition to a
multitude of other Library programming and service opportunities
for the community, all of these spaces will play a role in a
successful Business & Career Center for the Waterville
region.
The
BCC will host Career counselors from the Augusta CareerCenter and a
KVCAP employment services specialist will also be available. The
exact times/schedules for these professional services at the BCC
are still in development.
The
BCC will be offering workshops to business owners, entrepreneurs,
job seekers, individuals interested in career development, and
creative types interested in developing business models to support
their work. We will be providing basic computing skills and email
management workshops. We will be hosting programs facilitated by
many community individuals, business owners/managers, and service
providers. A service provision and programming schedule will soon
be released.
The
heart of the Waterville Public Library Business & Career Center
will be located in what was the main circulation desk area of the
Library. The BCC will be open upon completion of the Library
renovation project. At the BCC you will find a friendly environment
that is equipped with-
professionals
eager to assist you in your job seeking, career development, and/or
business evolution,
computers
linked to authoritative resources,
a
multifunctional copier/printer/fax/scanner available for public use
with a nominal fee charged for faxes and
prints/copies, and

current business, nonprofit, and career print and non-print
resources-with most items available for loan using your Waterville
Public Library card
The WPL
BCC endeavors to partner with area businesses, organizations and
individuals to identify and deliver resources and programming that
will best address some of the most salient needs and concerns of
job seekers, career individuals, creative types and businesses in
the region. Please contact Tammy Rabideau, Business & Career
Librarian, at tammy1@waterville.lib.me.us or

Thoughts on Libraries
|
"My
books are very few, but then the world is before me - a library
open to all - from which poverty of purse cannot exclude me - in
which the meanest and most paltry volume is sure to furnish
something to amuse, if not to instruct and improve. " ~Joseph Howe,
1824
