WestGate Plays Heavily into Region's Strategic Plans

Technology and research partnerships. Economic development. Entrepreneurship, education, and workforce development.

The defense industry is rightly focused on these things. That focus is shared by the WestGate@Crane Technology Park, and the entire Southwest Central Indiana

(SWCI) region.

We have talked about these critical components of our future for years, but there has never been a clear strategy to bring the concepts to completion - until now.

With funding from the Lilly Endowment, and experts from the Batelle Technology Partnership Practice, the region surrounding WestGate now has a "Strategic Plan for Economic and Community Prosperity." The plan was made public in November 2014, and WestGate plays heavily into its six strategies.

WestGate is perfectly situated to support entrepreneurship, with hands-on mentoring

and business counseling.  By focusing on entrepreneurship, and fully leveraging resources like the Battery Innovation Center, WestGate Academy, and our network of higher education institutions, we have a unique opportunity to bypass the "valley of death" between technology and market success. We now have a strong advocate for tech transfer in the Indiana Office of Defense Development, John Dement.

With John's new role, our unique assets and resources, and the capacity to work with I
vy Tech, Indiana University, University of Southern Indiana, Purdue University, Vincennes University and others, WestGate is reaching out to help secure a skilled and ready workforce. We have what we need to tailor regional programs and certifications to meet industry's demands - strengthening our region and Crane as we go.

This is just a snapshot of the strategies and actions identified in the SWCI Strategic Plan, and there are many opportunities for immediate action.
