Friday, May 29
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. The celebration of Pentecost was really a harvest festival. It was also a time of remembrance when the people of God recalled that God gave them the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. It was essentially a celebration of thanks.

But Pentecost, as described in the second chapter of Acts, was something vastly different. The believers had been waiting and praying as they had been told to do by Jesus. Then this mighty rush and roar of a wind like tongues of fire…it was a celebration of Pentecost like no other before or any since. It was a day in history when the church was born.

Pentecost reveals the essence of creation itself. It is simply the way our ever-creating God works, as Paul wrote that ‘in Christ all things are made new.’ (2 Cor. 5:17) The Holy Spirit empowered the church and gave it courage to move forward with contagious joy!

I believe that is the challenge of Pentecost for you and me. Yes, we are waiting in our own rooms, but we know that we are more than our physical space. As the Spirit then, so the same Spirit energizes us for the present. The message of the gospel is the same, but we are learning to speak in a different language.

We will meet the challenges of Pentecost because we are a community of faith committed to deepening personal connections, engaging in mission and outreach for those who hurt, sharing generously of our creative gifts, and truly moving forward with contagious joy!

Grace and peace,
Bruce Lancaster

Today's Hymn
Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness

Refrain : Spirit, spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness, calling and free.
Spirit, spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind from the sea.

You moved on the waters; you called to the deep;
Then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
And over the eons you called to each thing, “Awake from your slumbers
And rise on your wings.” Refrain

You swept through the dessert; you stung with the sand;
And you goaded your people with a law and a land.
When they were confounded with idols and lies,
Then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes.

You sang in a stable; you cried from a hill;
Then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still.
And down in the city, you called once again
When you blew through your people on the rush of the wind.

You call from tomorrow; you break ancient schemes;
From the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams.
Our women see visions; our men clear their eyes.
With bold new decisions your people arise.
