PSAT 10
Any interested sophomore is invited and encouraged to take the PSAT 10 this spring at York Catholic.  The PSAT 10 mirrors the PSAT, and offers a tenth grader the opportunity to preview and practice for the actual PSAT without stress over score reporting.  Scores from the PSAT 10 are not reported and do not impact college applications in any way.  Students benefit from the opportunity to engage with the material and become familiar with the format of the test before taking the PSAT in October of their junior year.   PSAT test scores do count; those scores are referenced to determine Merit Scholars, and free practice tests are available online through College Board.  Features of the PSAT 10 are as follows:
  • The PSAT 10 is a three-hour exam, featuring a math section and a reading/writing section.
  • Each section is worth 760 points for a possible total composite of 1520.
  • The math section targets algebra and advanced math problems.  A spring testing session is optimal as sophomores will be concluding a year of Algebra II.
The test will be offered in the York Catholic library from 8-11 AM on Saturday, April 13.  Any interested sophomore must register by February 15.  Click here for the registration form; they are also available in the main office.  Cost per student is $20.00, and checks can be made out to York Catholic.  Questions may be directed to Kathy Hand at khand@yorkcatholic.org
Report Cards
Due to the revised schedule from our snow day, report cards for the 2nd marking period will now be distributed to students Friday, February 1.
Catholic Schools Week
York Catholic will be joining the nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools January 26-February 2. Students will honor service to the community, faculty/staff, and religious life throughout the week with a variety of activities including reading to children at partner schools, delivering gift bags and thank you notes to our bus drivers and teachers, and helping the cafeteria staff serve lunch.

To end our Catholic Schools Week celebration, we invite all students to show their Irish Pride on Friday, February 1 by participating in a Green and Gold dress down day!

Family Mass & Battle of the Buildings
To kick off Catholic Schools Week, join us at our York Deanery Celebration Mass on Saturday, January 26, at 4 PM in the YC auditorium.  Attendance at this Mass fulfills your Sunday obligation. Following Mass, we will move to the gym for the 5th Annual Battle of the Buildings at 6 PM. This is a friendly inter-partner school competition of "minute-to-win-it" type games. The teachers are the competitors and the families are the fans.

The price of admission is a donated item for the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. Every school will have a special table to collect these donations. The top three schools with the most donations will earn points for their team! The following is a list of most needed items: bars of soap, toothpaste, mac & cheese, hamburger/tuna helper, spaghetti sauce, canned soup, canned fruit, cake icing.

The York Catholic Music Association will have food and beverages available for purchase.

Catholic Schools Week Grandparents Mass
Later in the week, on Thursday, January 31, at 1:30 PM, YC students and their grandparents are invited to sit together at our Catholic Schools Week Mass. To register for the Grandparents Mass, contact Sheila Gick at sgick@yorkcatholic.org or 717-846-8871 x217 by January 28.

Congratulations to Nate Gingerich (trumpet), Mason Kovach (trumpet), and Hunter Karpulk (trombone) who auditioned and were selected for the District 7 Concert Band.  They will be participating in the District Band Festival this weekend which culminates in a concert on Saturday, January 26, at 7 PM at Lancaster Mennonite School.

Geography Bee Winner
Congratulations to 8th grader, Jaiden Newcomer, for winning the Junior High Geography Bee. Jaiden will move on to represent York Catholic at the Diocesan Bee.

Future Leaders of York
Christine Catterall is representing York Catholic in Future Leaders of York (FLY). FLY is a group of 36 high school sophomores and juniors from 21 York County high schools who learn to become lifelong, responsible, active participants in their hometown community. Participants develop leadership skills and lasting relationships with each other and community leaders. A particularly impactful portion of this session includes a lunch where FLY students and school administrators discuss issues in their schools.
Inclement Weather
During inclement weather that would cause a school closing or delay of schedule, York Catholic will call/text/email you through our One Call Now Emergency Notification system. Other modes of notification include WGAL TV-8, Fox43, and the YC website. Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their district closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS. The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern. These students follow York Catholic's delay and closing schedule.
In Case You Missed It...

Offering new experiences to our students... 7th graders Ethan Andrews and Hannah Stover hit the slopes with the York Catholic Ski & Snowboard Club at Ski Roundtop. It was the first time on skis for both!
