Golden Apple Award Winner
Congratulations to Heather Hoffman who was named a Golden Apple Award recipient by the Diocese of Harrisburg! The Golden Apple is the highest recognition given by the Diocese to a teacher or administrator commending professional excellence, leadership, commitment to Catholic values, and devotion to teaching in a Catholic school.

Ms. Hoffman has served the students of York Catholic for more than 20 years as a Math Teacher, Admissions Director, Middle School Assistant Principal, and Cheerleading Coach. Her name is synonymous with York Catholic school spirit. In fact, if you ask any alumni who on the YC staff bleeds the most green and gold, every individual will state “Heather Hoffman.”

She is never short on time for students or staff when they have a question or need help. She uses examples from her personal and professional life to reinforce the lessons of our faith on a daily basis. Our community is blessed to have Ms. Hoffman’s example as a teacher, mentor, and strong woman of faith.
Please click below to carefully review the Diocese of Harrisburg/York Catholic Middle & High School COVID-19 Health & Safety Plan 2021-22. As COVID-19 guidelines evolve, our school will continue to adapt to the recommendations issued by federal, state, Diocesan, and local entities for our area. Any changes will be communicated through the weekly Irish Eye e-newsletter.

Mini-THON is Here!
This Saturday, March 12, over 200 York Catholic High School students will once again join the efforts of over 280 high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools to have fun and work to conquer pediatric cancer. Based on Penn State’s successful THON, a 46-hour dance marathon, Mini-THON challenges students to stay on their feet while participating in a number of high energy activities including dodgeball, speedball, four square, and Zumba.

All proceeds accumulated through the efforts of Mini-THON are donated directly to The Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in Hershey, PA. In 8 years, York Catholic has raised over $145,000 to help conquer pediatric cancer. This year our goal is to raise $20,000 and raise awareness “For the Kids.”
Donations can be given to Mrs. Wertz in room 204 at YC or paid online by clicking the button below to use The Four Diamonds Online Social Fundraising Website, DonorDrive.

All money submitted for Mini-THON is non-refundable. Students may wear their Mini-THON t-shirts, sneakers, and pants or modest shorts to the event. Students are reminded of York Catholic’s Academic Eligibility Policy.
For the Kids! Friday Shirt Day

Students may pay $1 to wear blue or gold shirts tomorrow, Friday, March 11, in support of the Four Diamonds fight against pediatric cancer. Blue is the official color of the Four Diamonds and yellow is the color recognized to support cancer patients. Students should pay their $1 in homeroom on Friday. Uniform pants, skirts, or skorts must be worn.
Middle School Dance

The 7th & 8th Grade students are invited to the Middle School Dance on Friday, March 25, from 7-9 PM in the cafeteria. The theme is “Spring Fling.” Students are asked to dress in pastel colors. Cost is $5 in advance. Tickets are on sale during lunch March 14-18. Please refer to the After-school Dress Code guidelines on page 18-19 in the Student Handbook/Agenda. Students are reminded of York Catholic’s Academic Eligibility Policy.
Bring a Friend to School Day
YC is holding Bring a Friend to School Day on Monday, March 28. Current students can encourage an interested friend (from dance class, scouts, a sports team, your neighbor or cousin, etc.) to spend the day at YC as a shadow student. Instead of shadowing with one of our Ambassadors, they can shadow with their friend. Please have the friend’s parent contact Ms. Heather Hoffman at hhoffman@yorkcatholic.org or 717-846-8871 x220 by Friday, March 18, to set up the visit and to receive a permission slip. Only students with a real interest in possibly attending YC will be scheduled for this date.
Welcome Wednesday

York Catholic will be open from 10 AM-2 PM on Wednesday, March 16, for families to drop by for a tour with one of our YC Student Ambassadors and to meet with our Admissions Director to get questions answered. For more information, contact Heather Hoffman at hhoffman@yorkcatholic.org or 717-846-8871 x220.

In Case You Missed It...
Sixty-five students representing all grade levels volunteered last weekend as fans in the stands to cheer on the Special Olympians at the York Ice Arena. Some highlights of the day:

  • 9th grader Bailey Green served as the announcer for the speed skating events.
  • Seniors Maddy Janusz and Jamie Volk helped time and judge the races; they were doing such a great job and having so much fun they asked to stay longer than their scheduled shift.
  • 8th grader Josselyn Collier stayed all day. All of her friends left after their scheduled shift, but she begged her mom if she could stay, saying "I don't care if I get more service hours or if I'm cold... I just want to be here to cheer on the Special Olympians." She was on her feet actively cheerleading the entire day. A total inspiration.
  • Whenever the competitors would skate close to where we were in the stands, our students would let their cheers be heard. On numerous occasions, the athletes would glance up and smile, sometimes even gesturing with a "thumbs up" - then, get their 'game face' right back on.
  • Our students formed a “tunnel” for the medal recipients to walk through on their way to get their award.
  • One of our students overheard an athlete say, "Can you believe all these people are here cheering for us?! This is amazing!"
Refer a Friend to YC
If you know a friend, family member, or anyone looking for a high-quality, Christ-centered education for their children who do not already attend a Catholic school, you could receive a $250 credit toward your child's tuition at York Catholic.

York Catholic's Parent Referral Program is a win-win for everyone involved. Referred students receive an outstanding education from York Catholic, while parents of the referred families get peace of mind knowing their child is gaining so much more than just a top-notch education. Families who refer someone who registers at York Catholic receive a $250 credit towards their child's tuition.

You, as parents, are our best ambassadors.  In order for the Parent Referral Program to be a success, we need information about individuals who may be interested in joining the York Catholic family. All you need to do is click below to fill out the form. If the family you refer attends York Catholic through their first semester, your family's tuition will be credited $250, spread into 4 credits applied to the months of February, March, April, and May.

It really is that simple. So go ahead. Please click on the box below and allow us the opportunity to do what we love -- help to develop, nurture, and encourage children so they may grow in faith, mind, and heart. Mail or email the form to us and we will take it from there!

The Parent Referral Program is open to all parents of current York Catholic students. The tuition credit is not available for referring your own children. The $250 credit is only good toward tuition on a student's account; no cash is given, and it is non-transferrable. A referred student applies only to a new student from a non-partner school.

Thank you for all you do for our school!
Tax Break Opportunity
Pennsylvania now allows individuals to take advantage of EITC Tax Credits (just as businesses can) whereby you have the opportunity to re-direct 90% of your personal state income taxes to York Catholic High School.

The Special Purpose Entity (SPE) is based on tax liability, not income, therefore each taxpayer’s situation will differ. Participants must be PA residents where at least one spouse is employed or has an ownership interest in a PA for-profit business. An individual or couple filing jointly must have a state tax liability of $3,500 or more to participate. To see if you qualify for 2022, you can find your PA tax liability on Form PA-40 Line 12 of your 2021 tax return. 100% of participant contributions are distributed to the school. You have to pay these taxes regardless, so why not have a say in how your taxes are allocated? Additionally, you will receive at least a 10% personal deduction on your federal taxes. The money you re-direct to York Catholic is for educational purposes, specifically tuition assistance.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please follow these steps:

The last day to apply for 2022 is December 1, 2022, however, the available funds may run out prior to December, so it's recommended to apply as soon as possible.

For more information about this easy tax donation, please contact Katie Seufert, York Catholic Principal, at kseufert@yorkcatholic.org.

Inclement Weather
During inclement weather that would cause a school closing or delay of schedule, York Catholic will call/text/email you through our One Call Now Emergency Notification system. Other modes of notification include WGAL TV-8, Fox43, and the YC website. Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their district closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS. The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern. These students follow York Catholic’s delay and closing schedule.
