Parent to Parent Newsletter

Welcome to the June issue of the Your Choice Parent to Parent newsletter. This newsletter contains important information covering a wide variety of drug and alcohol prevention topics. The content is written for parents by parents.

We have concluded our 2016-2017 speaking season and would like to say a sincere THANK YOU to everyone who we have met this year who shares the same passion we do to prevent substance use among our youth. It has been both inspiring and humbling to meet so many people along this journey that are dedicated to this cause. Thank you all for your support and partnership!

Please consider liking our page and following us on Facebook. We share valuable prevention news, tips, and other information throughout the week. It is a great way to stay connected and informed.

Have a wonderful summer!

What Parents Should Know: Drugged Driving

A recent report from the Governor's Highway Safety Association revealed that drugged driving accidents have now surpassed alcohol-related accidents.  Drugged driving is a complex subject because there are hundreds of drugs that can impair driving.

Drugged driving is becoming a public health crisis. Many medications and drugs affect the brain and can alter perception, reaction time, balance, coordination - all skills needed to drive safely. Even small amounts of drugs can have an impact on driving skills. Teenagers generally have a low-risk perception when it comes to drug use and driving.

Tips For Teens: Detour Letter
Each month we feature an inspirational letter from a student in our Detour Class. Detour is a class designed to gently but powerfully challenge common beliefs about drug and alcohol use. One of the assignments at the end of the class is to write a letter to a special person in your life that touches on some important aspects from the class.

Action Point: Understanding Social Media

Traditional social media sites are evolving. Attempts by parents to scrutinize and monitor online behavior through traditional sites has resulted in an increase in secretive sites. Often times these sites are equipped with advanced privacy settings. It is important that parents remain up to date on social media and help their children develop the skills to make good choices in their online behavior.

Community Resource Spotlight: Tobacco Free Community Partnership

The Tobacco Free Community Partnership is a grassroots coalition made up of partner from Dodge, Jefferson, and Waukesha Counties. Our mission is "to partner with communities to eliminate tobacco use and tobacco related disease through education, advocacy and promotion of tobacco-free living."

As a group committed to reducing the burden of tobacco in our communities, we strive to be a reliable source of credible information for the community, local, state, and federal policy makers. Through a variety of community outreach and education tactics our coalition promotes clean indoor air and tobacco-free policies, advocates for a reduction in youth tobacco use by limiting access to tobacco products, and supports sharing resources for treating tobacco addiction.

For more information or to join the coalition please visit our webpage  or contact Coalition Coordinator, Emma Kane, at  Emma.Kane@Lung.org .  We're also on  Facebook  and   Twitter!
