Christmas Nativity Scene Of Three Wise Men Magi Going To Meet Baby Jesus in the Manger with the City of Bethlehem in the distance Illustration
This Sunday, as Christmastide ends, we enter Epiphany. In Matthew's Gospel we will hear the story of the Wise Men and how they followed the star to Jerusalem, asked where the recently born King of the Jews was to be found, and how they visited the infant Jesus. Madeleine L’Engle, in her book “The Glorious Impossible” says of the Wise Men: “The wise men were wise men indeed, men of great intellectual sophistication; but each one saw the birth of an unknown child as an event of unprecedented proportions. They understood that the birth of a single child could affect the entire universe, just as physicists today understand that all of creation is a single organism. Nothing happens in isolation. … So, these ancient astronomers believed that something was happening in Bethlehem that would change the world.”

Perhaps what made these Wise Men so wise was their ability to broaden their vision; They could look beyond the immediate around them and understand that each person’s life is like a pebble tossed into water. Each of us has a rippling effect on all those around us and our ripples intersect endlessly – on and on. As we begin this New Year and decade, perhaps this is not the time for resolutions. Perhaps it is the time for increased awareness of our interconnection, of our interdependence. We are called to love one another, to care for each other, and to be responsible for each other before God. Embrace your call here at Holy Cross for we are a community of faith who believes in the hope that our lives, and the lives of those around us, will be changed for the better as we pay homage to Christ, as those Wise Men did all those years ago.

Ministry Leadership Transitions

Lay Eucharistic Visitors : We give thanks for the ministry of Marcia Pierce who has faithfully led this ministry for the past year. Marcia's quiet presence has been a blessing to those she has visited and to this ministry team, and she will be missed. Marcia and Aldon are on their way to their new home in Tennessee. We are blessed to have Muriel Wahl assume leadership of this ministry.

Wardens and Bishop's Committee ("BC") : We will give thanks and celebrate the ministries of the following individuals who are transiting from their current roles:
  • Tom Mauro: Tom is stepping down as Sr Warden after two years of faithful leadership in this role. Tom leads with a heart full of grace and while he will no longer serve in this capacity, we can expect to be blessed by his gentle presence in various ministry areas at Holy Cross.
  • Karen Sanchez: Bishop Susan has appointed Karen as Sr Warden effective with our Annual Meeting. Karen is resigning her position as a BC member to assume this new role.
  • Stacy Craft: Stacy was appointed to fill the final year of Randy Echito's term and will transition off BC leadership. She will not be standing for election to another term as she has recently completed her master's degree and is pursuing a full-time position in her chosen field.
  • Sue Baas: Sue's 3-year term is concluding. Per the terms of our By-laws, she is not eligible to serve or be appointed to a BC role for a period of 1-year. We can expect to find Sue to continue her involvement with Godly Play.
  • Marcia Pierce: As noted above, Marcia has resigned from the BC due to her move to Tennessee.
