Welcome to your library news update!

Summer celebrations are happening at the library, and you're invited! Stop by Cooper Branch in Colonial Beach on Tuesday, 6/17, to wish them a happy 25th birthday and celebrate with light refreshments.

Our next Music on the Steps concerts feature Laurie Rose Griffith's and Peter Mealy's acoustic performance on 6/16 and ThoseNewYorkKids (formerly Meaux) on 6/23.

The all-ages Summer Reading Challenge continues through 8/15. Sign up (if you haven't already!) to earn points and win prizes by logging your reading and activities.

Lunch at the Library is provided with the help of community partners at Howell, Salem Church, and Fredericksburg branches. These nutritious lunches are offered at no charge to children and teens during the summer. Check the schedule online.

June is Pride Month! The library has events and booklists for all ages. See what's available at librarypoint.org/pride.

June is also Audiobook Month, and we have some great choices for adult listeners to take with them as they travel, work, or relax at home. Teens can check out eAudio and eBooks from OverDrive (Libby) featuring plenty of shenanigans and perfect for summer. Middle Graders can find eBooks and eAudio that invite them to go on exciting adventures.

Our IdeaSpace location offers training (called badging) on equipment to help you with your creative projects. This month, we're featuring the Glowforge, a machine that can cut or engrave a material using a high-powered laser to quickly create complex designs.

Come to our locations for exciting classes and events. Salem Church is offering Qi Gong for Vitality classes monthly for older adults. Backyard Composting 101 is happening at several locations. Attendees will learn how to reuse kitchen throwaways for greening their gardens. We're celebrating native pollinators at Fredericksburg on Saturday, 6/21, with interactive games and other activities.

Grow a Reader specials are so much fun, and we have many of them happening this month! Families can stop by for stories and activities centered around Father's Day, Eid al-Adha, Juneteenth, and Pride. We have a special Grow a Reader class series, Feeling Ready, that is perfect for children starting kindergarten in the fall and is offered at several branches.

Families won't want to miss the exciting visit from the Science Heroes, who will be at Towne Centre on 6/24, sharing "Adventure of the Missing Color," a science-filled tale complete with experiments and lots of audience participation. On 6/18 at Porter, Les Zazous will be taking us on a musical storytelling journey around the world.

Blue Gray Therapy Dogs will be dropping by the branches this summer, offering PAWS for Reading, an opportunity for children in grades K-6 to practice their reading aloud with a patient pup. Time with a Therapy Dog is also offered for those with disabilities in grade 7 through adult, attending with a caregiver. Check the schedule online, and sign up for either program with the hosting branch.

Getting away from it all or staying away from it all? You can take your library with you on your vacation or staycation. Download travel guides, beach reads, and more with our Libby and hoopla apps!
